A grading question on a '67 Topps card

I recently picked up a 1967 Topps card, #454, the Marichal Checklist "with his left ear" variation. I'm considering getting it graded but the picture of Marichal is very close to the edge. It looks worse on the scan, but my lighted magnifier has a bult in measuring scale and it's exactly 80/20. But the fact that the remaining 3 borders seem to have the same width makes me wonder if the graders would ignore the head being so close to the edge of the card. Perhaps they don't consider his head a border. Any opinions or experiences are appreciated.

  • Dude, I had a similar issue before on another set. I called in and eventually got a grader to explain how centering would be judged on that set. I was given a fair explanation (at the time) and as a result I never graded any of the cards, based on the "supposed" standards they would of ALL been OC.

You should take your chances anyhow, in my opinion, as with the set I had wondered about I saw a large dealer (honestly forget which now) with a run of 8/9 cards on eBay, but ALL OC as it had been explained to me on the phone days earlier. Go for it and send that checklist in!

Be sure to measure the card to ensure it isn't short (top to bottom). Comparing the sides to the bottom border, it actually looks like the card is centered a bit low. Perhaps the centering should be measured using the '6th series' text. If the card is the correct size, that photo would make it difficult to find well centered copies.
  • Dan, isn't the lower left edge miscut? It appears to bow out near the bottom left, starting around #465 Horton's name.

On a much lighter note, as a variation to the credit card advertising theme,

Grade given by Dan when he pulled it from the commons bin..........MINT

Grade given by Dan upon further reflection after going home........NM-MINT

Grade of a reasonable grader at professional grading company....8

Grade of THE GRADER OF DEATH.....................................................6 oc

TG -- The edges are fine - no miscut. The scan isn't very good, but that may be due to scanning the card inside a Card Saver 1. The numbers "469" and "470" look awful in the scan, but look normal on the card to the naked eye.

So thanks to all on the input. It will go to PSA soon and I'll let you know how it comes out.
