1968 OPC Hockey

Only two graded 9. SMR is $85 (not that it means anything).

  • JESUS!

i figured this would go for $125, maybe $150 tops.
  • The last time I saw it, it was at $50 or so.

I'll stick to 7's and the occasional 8 if affordable.

GR, are you working on a set?
  • im working on a "type" set of one regular issue card from 1951-1989, in PSA 8 or higher. i already have a 68 Plante 8, but i figured i would throw down a $100 bid just for kicks. hockey is still lagging behind other sports, cept for rare instances when there are a few guys with deep pockets working on the same set. the 68 OPC, 69 OPC, and 54 Topps sets come to mind. with those sets, money is really no issue, especially for a low pop 9.

The price realized is pretty amazing, but less shocking than the fact that it wasn't won by predsfan or joester.

  • notoriousbob is buying them at a pretty good clip. He bought a bunch of KSA 8-9.5's that I'm guessing he is hoping to crossover.
  • Yawie,

You're in St. Louis aren't you? Do you see many 1968 OPC down there?

Yeah, I've noticed the notoriousBOB enter the fray in this set, but don't really know much about him. If he's willing to outspend Jamie and Joe on cards, he's obviously a serious competitor. I just wish he were around when I sold my PSA 9 Rod Gilbert, which went for about half of what that Richard went for. It's funny because one of the reasons I gave up on this set - besides having the opportunity to pick up some cards for my other sets - was that there was such a dropoff in demand after what was then the Big Two. I was a little worried that I was pouring money into cards that few people would want.

Since then, however, it looks as though a few other people have started collecting it, including another who wants the best and is willing to pay for it. I think the set will continue to gain in popularity, but there are still relative deals to be had if you can wait for what is now the Big Three to get their cards. AJCards had some PSA 8 commons end last night. I didn't see if they wound up selling, but with less than an hour to go, I don't think they even hit their opening bid of $24.99.

Oh and to answer your question, jrmac, I don't think there are any '68 OPC's around town. I see a few Topps '68s at the shows I attend around here, but nothing to write home about.

i think the '68 sets are as nice graphically as any from that era, and that fact should keep it popular with folks gettting into hockey or those looking for a nice set.

I had a bunch of '68 OPC's end last night, all commons, with prices ranging between 25-40 bucks. The demand for this set really appears to be picking up.
  • I picked up two of the cards AJ Cards had listed, the Eddie Shack and the Gary Doak. I also bought a Bob Woytowich in an 8 for less than $20. I was pretty happy with that but there are 10 of them graded an 8.

I lost out on the Gendron because my esnipe bid was later than Notoriousbob's. He picked this one up for $25. Its a 1/3 but I'm guessing Predsfan and Joester already have the other two.
