1976 Topps question

I am not a collector of this set and besides the design, I am not at all familiar with the nuances or difficulties.

I am looking for a Luzinski in PSA 8 or 9, hell I would take a PSA 7. The pop report is low on this one, so I would imagine it is either in a tough series or simply a lack of interest in getting them graded. I bought two unopened packs in the past three months and not only did I not get a Luzinski, I did not get a single card worthy of grading.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance fellas.

  • There are only 3 PSA 8's of him and a lot of other players in the 76 set, and this is probably due to the fact that there are not a lot of 76's out there and the one's that have been graded have been the stars. Check local shows for raw cards and you can probably get a deal. Good luck!

Thanks. I have checked the Fort the last three times and eBay on an almost daily basis. It is a card that I simply have not been able to find. Even the Phillies card king himself, Marc, does not have the card.

  • This is definitely a tough card. I am 95% complete with my set and i still don't have this one. I am hoping a bunch will turn up from the Registry Specialimage
I am working on PSA baseball sets in 8 or better from 1973 thru 1976. Also Mike Schmidt & Pete Rose sets.
  • Wetzel - I am also putting this set together and currently 11th with my set on PSA. I have about 100-150 more cards PSA 8 or better that I just need to sit down and enter the PSA #'s into the set to update it. I was going to do a 74, 75, and 76 set and decided on the '76 for now - it was the one set I collected the most as a kid. Currently I am running an auction of 74's in PSA 8 ending tomorrow you might be interested in, and I am also going to add some 75 mini's in 8's in a week or so - Ryan, Aaron, Rose all 8's plus some Rose cards from 73 in PSA 8. I will let you know if I do.

Good job on your set so far!

I pulled the Luzinski out of my set to check it out. It looks like 9 quality but has a light print flaw on the upper border. Is this the flaw that plagues this card? It may keep this one from getting a 9 but I'd be surprised if it doesn't get an 8.

I should add that another card with a common print flaw is the 1974 Terry Harmon. I have a 9 that has the print smudge (similar to the Molitor rookie) and have seen other 9s with that same flaw. Perhaps that's an indication the Luzinski will 9.

Guys, I gotta have a slew of Luzinski's in 1976. I'll check when I get home on Sunday.

  • Bob - My daughter Janelle would also like to add this one to her set also. I am thoroughly enjoying her efforts to be a 76' player. I know of a few Father Son collectors among the registry faithful but Janelle is focused on making an inpact at some point on this set.
Cheap PSA 8's are always good.

  • Don't forget Moffitt, Hilgendorf, and Helms. These are like trying to find a nicely centered '52 Topps Matthews!

  • That is the crazy thing about set collecting - when a PSA 9 Alomar fro '76 goes for the same amount as a PSA 8 Mantle from '68. Obviously if you are putting together a nice set it is a necessity but a lot of money any way you look at it.

You can "put together a nice set" from this year for less than that 1 card will sell for! image

I paid less than half that for the three vending sets I bought. For those prices, I'd have no problem busting my set and selling off the low pops. The problem is you never know which PSA 9s go for $400 and which ones go for $10 since it isn't always tied to the population of the card.

GEMINT - Plus with a set this volatile, a $400 PSA-9 today can bring in that $10 price later image ...jay
  • Hi Guys,

while we are on the subject, I am looking for these 2 1976 Traded cards in PSA 9 if anyone has them:

    532T Milt May
    618T Jack Brohamer

    thanks

Jay, that's the truth. I have a 75 Topps Larry Christenson PSA 8 on ebay right now (under my other screen name) that has no bids at $2.99 and it is about to end. That cards used to sell for $30-$40.

As for that Alomar, that is crazy. Pop 2 1975 Topps only get like $50-$100. Why is 1976 so much more? 75's are definately a tougher set (that I know of).
  • Invader - I have both traded cards in PSA 8 but no 9's. I assume you are upgrading your set? Also, I have about 20-30 PSA 8 Traded cards from that set if anyone needs them at a fair price. PLMK.

Like I said, population isn't the only factor that determines record prices. I think that card has less than 5 8's as well as the 2 9's.

the one thing that rbdjr1 has going against him is that second bidder is all yankees and obviously bids to the moon.
