Perfect Example of Buying the Card, Not the Holder

I came across this as a perfect example of buying the card and not the holder.
A 1952 Bowman Stan Musial PSA 6 sold for $239.16. Here is the link.

A 1952 Bowman Stan Musial PSA 5 sold for $274.99. Here is the link.

Both auction ended the same night and substantially at the same time. Same seller as well.

I would rather have the six based upon reviewing the scan. There are no corner dings on the six
like there is on the five. The five is also more yellow than the six. This is my opinion after reviewing
the cards rather quickly. Seems like the buyer of the five paid too much.

  • see my other thread about the same
type of comparison between psa cards.

here are the cards for This thread:
(and Yes, I would want the 5 too, UNLESS
there is a crease on that one that is not seen,
and IF the 6 has no crease)

The centering on the 6 must really bother you if you prefer the 5 over the 6. If both cards were canned using the same resolution, the picture in the 5 looks faded and the borders look dirty. Collectors have to remember that, while centering is important, it is not the only criteria.

although the centering is off, the 6 looks much cleaner and the colors look brighter.

  • It's probably the centering.

What a difference a week makes Jay - good deal ...

The PSA 6 has much better color than the 5 - take a look at his hat. The centering is not as good but the appearance is better.

Plus, the corners on the 5 don't look nearly as sharp. This is a case of centering being a major issue, since at first glance the 6 looks worse than the 5. But I agree, centering isn't the only criteria.

    I bought a '52 Bowman Musial (PSA 6) for $246 about a
month ago on ebay. It had slightly better t/b centering
than the PSA 6 shown on this thread, along with nice
bold color. The SMR is not very accurate on this card.
Up until the point I finally got my PSA 6, I had been
tracking prices for about a year. SMR on an EX-MT 6 is $325
and an EX 5 lists for $240. Like aconte said, the buyer of
the PSA 5 bid high & could've saved money with some patience.

The bid history on the PSA 5 card also shows that is was really
just the top 2 bidders that drove up the card:

    kroywen48ny( 399) US $274.99 Jan-11-04 18:39:53 PST
    jodi-mo( 476) US $269.99 Jan-11-04 18:39:57 PST
    riverdog15( 11) US $201.32 Jan-11-04 18:18:00 PST

    (edited to make things clearer...)

Gee, I wonder why jodi-mo wanted to buy the well-centered PSA 5 Musial. image
We owe the guy who outsniped him a debt of gratitude.
