It's probably too late tonight, but we'd like to hear a report from Toneboy...

I'd like to hear the impressions from our newest, best YN, having been to a number of shows, including FUNs, and lots of LBs, among others... How was it for you, Toneboy?

I heard he was under the weather a week or so ago. I hope he is back 100%.

I'm still proud of the way he rated one of my Kennedies a "10". That's all the confirmation I needed.

Sorry Pat, but his scale isn't 1-10, but 10 is considerably high on the scale! He's a tough critic, and "on", when it comes to toning. I value his opinions.

You should have seen how proud Rainbowroosies was when Toneboy gave him a "9 1/2" on a particular Jefferson Nickel. Rainbowroosies made a special trip to Toneboy's hotel well after hours to get his coins assessed.

Toneboy will prepare his report after he shows up at school tomorrow (for the first time this year) image Right now he is pulling an "all nighter" on the homework he missed this week while attending FUN.

...and with the jet-lag, as well. What a trooper.
Too bad you're not from Oregon. Schools closed this week, here. No homework. Next week's load will probably be heavy, though... image

He plays a mean game of air hockey too. Then his dad stepped in and beat the snot out of me
in air hockey. We had a deal we couldn't come to terms on so we decided to settle it at the local
arcade. I think I got hustled.

Mitch, Next time we'll settle it at the pool hall...image

Craig: Yes, Toneboy (Justin) is my 12 year old son (well 12 in 2 weeks - but he now states he is 12). He collects (and simply enjoys looking at) coins that get him excited - usually beautifully toned coins. He lot viewed the entire FUN sale (including the pre-sale auctions as well) with me and enjoyed looking at every color coin I pulled for him to see. But, sometimes, he surprises even me. His favorite coin in the entire FUN sale - an IKE Dollar struck on a cent planchet where the holdered coin basically showed on the front of the holder just the reverse Eagle of the Ike dollar (beautifully well centered) in a pretty reddish hue the size of roughly a nickel (from being struck on a Memorial Cent planchet). Over the several days of lot viewing, I thought about why he loved it so much and with each day, I began to want to buy it for him more and more, as I realized just how cool the coin really was. I explained to Justin that I personally prefer errors that have a date, but, he was relentless in his decision that he thought that was the neatest coin in the sale. He actually asked Norma at Heritage for the opening bids to privately check on what the coin was going to open at. Unfortunately, the coin was going to open at more than $6,500 with the commish to Heritage, so I told him that was one he was NOT adding to his collection at this time image I can tell you first hand, even 12 year old boys still have dissapointments when they can not pick up the coin "of their dreams". But, as we all know, if he really wants it , he will own it ONE DAY.

On a separate subject, I really want to thank OnlyRoosies and his friend Alden, as they located a spectacular arcade and shared 2-3 hours with myself and Justin just having fun playing arcade games. I can assure you, Justin had the time of his life.

Toneboy has an excellent eye for color (aka eye appeal); he probably knows more about toning than many of his seniors who submit to these boards....Yes, the first coin I handed him graded "9.5" --- it was a killer coin. Onlyroosies was clearly jealous!!!! His usual score is about "4" on the Toneboy scaleimageimageimage

Yes, he has a very keen and well-educated eye for toned coins. He is particular and discriminative, and not known to get too emotional. very stable and accurate. I've watch this since he was 7... amazing !

Bill, Your at it again. I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong. Toneboy's favorite coin is a Roosie that he graded an 11.

Hi guys. Toneboy here. The Fun show was very interesting this year. We viewed well over 5,000 lots and went to auctions for nearly 6 days. I got to meet OnlyRoosies, RainbowRoosies, Howard Houston, Dave Schweitz, Tonelover (Jon), Mark Woods, Dena from NGC, Mark Ferguson a writer for Coin World, Doug Wright, many other collectors that we saw through our trip and all my friends at Heritage including Polly, Carlotta and Norma.

Through the 5000 lots we viewed, it surprised me that I only saw a few coins that really sparked my interest. Monster toned coins are very hard to come by these days! I did love lot 9812 - the error Ike Dollar struck on a penny planchet (no date), because it had very nice color. I went to ask Norma for the opening bid sheet and I researched that it would start at about $7,550. I knew at that point that it would be better to try to wait and see if we could find one cheaper.

The most fun things I did on the trip were: (1) going to the Arcade with Nick and Alden. We spent 2-3 hours playing air hockey, shooting pistols and playing racing games. Those guys were really entertaining; (2) seeing Peter Pan and Cheaper By The Dozen with Dad; (3) going to Vitos Chop House and partying with Dad and his friend. Dad's friend showed me how to properly attack a Porterhouse bone. First you order your big steak with a bone. Next, after you finish the meat, you sneak up on your bone. Then, you look around to make sure no one is watching you. Next, you tell the bone who's boss while growling at it ("Who's Your Daddy" and "Bone - You're Mine")! Finally, you attack the bone with vigor. Dad's friend was the Center on the Football team and always ate his meat this way. When the waiter walked by, his eyes buldged and just said "Wow" as we attacked our bones! I was feeling pretty good after three IBC Root Beers as well!; (4) attending the auctions, especially when Steve's Commem coins went off.

All in all, it was a very successful trip. Steve, I appreciate all the books you have sent me on coins and I was happy to cheer your coins on as they went higher and higher at the auctions

I hope to see all my coin buddies soon. image

    Toneboy:

Yours was one of the best reports about FUN that I've read. For what it's worth, there's a nice miniature golf course on International Drive really close to the FUN show. The gold course is called Pirates Cove. When I take my kids to the show, we always play a round. You won't be able to play next year because the FUN show is not being held in Orlando next year, but in 2006 you should talk your Dad into playing a round with you. It's a bit on the expensive side, but I'm sure your Dad can afford it with all the nice coins he's bought and sold! imageimage
