Opinion on Registry Scans

gemintgemint Posts: 6,101 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've not found a way to get decent resolution scans that fit in the viewer on the set registry. Either the scan is larger which results in the scan being larger than the view box or the resolution is low with the entire card shown in the view box. You can see this by viewing card #6 vs #50. My set is viewed at the following link:

1969 Set

Is it just my scanner or have others had a similar problem? If I try to increase the resolution but shrink the scaling percentage (e.g., 25% of actual size), the image still comes out with poor resolution. I assume this is because the scan is being scaled down too much. I end up scanning under a lower resolution and larger size to get the Clemente type scan. The card #6 scan was actually done on higher resolution.

When viewing scans, do most of you prefer a higher quality image that requires expanding the image viewer to full screen or do you prefer a smaller image that is more easily viewable but isn't as sharp?

I put my scans up for better imaging. I know it requires them to be larger than the veiwing area but I believe it gives members a chance to comment on the card. I know when I am done with my 68's I will have 60 10's for viewing and it will give members a chance to learn about grading. I learn whenever I look at my already graded cards and has saved me money on submissions. Personally the 50 Clemente is the way I like it.

  • I scan at 300dpi and use a "descreen" function to remove the textured effect like you see on your Clemente. See if your scanner software has this option. After the scan is done, I resize the scan in a photo editing software to about 100dpi and scale it down to about 65%.

I use these settings for adding scans of the front and back of cards to all of my sets. If you are only adding the front, you can get away with resizing the scan a bit larger (maybe 150 dpi at 75%?). Play around with different combinations of size and resolution until you find the right mix.

Here are some examples of my scans.

that's perfect like that, you can slide show right through without horsing around and resizing the pop-up window. the only set i have that works like that is the horizontal '62 fb.
which photo editor are you using to stich the two images?
i had one on my old computer that came with my scanner, I "upgraded" and now i can't do that.
I'd like to add the backs on my wilson franks set.

It's a lot of work making scans, but i for one enjoy seeing sets like yours.

    Here is what I do:

Scan the images at 300 dpi with with the scanner lid up. After the scan...reduce it to 33% of the original size.

Here is a sample of scans: John Basilone - 1962/63 Topps Hockey Set

yours I have to resize the pop-out windo to click the next button.
maybe it's my set-up, if so, somebody tell me how to limit the pop-up window size to fit on my screen.
  • I also scan at 300dpi, then drop the scan into Photoshop and play around with the size until I'm just below the 100K cutoff for the registry images.

This is the first set I've added images to, so I'd like to hear some comments. My scans are big, and will cause you to increse the size of the popup window, but I think they are very detailed.

Not sure which John you are refering to but my scans are only 315 X 528 pixels which is just about the same size as a real PSA slab.

John, I get the same thing on your set. I have to 'full screen' the image to see the bottom of the card. Virtual's example shows the entire card in the mini viewer. I'm going to try his suggestions and see if I can repeat it.

    Virtualizards scans are 589 X 504 pixels.

Not sure why a scan that the same size as a PSA slab (by pixels) would not fit on your screen.

    am I missing something?

Ive tried viewing my scans on two different computers both at home at work using monitor sizes from 15 - 19 inches and they show the same.

This is the same exact size of the scan that shows up on my "pop up screen"

The view from my monitor :

gemint's cards 1 - 12 are fine, but # 13 is bigger, then some cards are smaller then some are bigger.
It's because you're not using the same dpi setting every time you scan, or you aren't shrinking the same amount.

Virtualizard's and Basilone's scans are great and fit in my viewing window just right
so that I can see the entire card and don't have to move my mouse to click the next button.

The53Kid's scans don't fit in my window and I have to scroll down to see the rest of the card and to hit the next button.
The large scans are nice for detail, but a bit awkward for casual viewing.

I think how the scans appear on your screen depend somewhat
on the display settings that you've chosen through your computer's control panel.

Thanks for the help....one of the big reasons to scan for me is to share my collection with the other guys....so ease of viewing is important to me.

I like to use a higher display setting on my monitor so that my help. Also, if the whole pop up menu is on your screen but cuts off the card..you can just click and drag the bottom right corner to open it up farther...instead of just maximizing the screen. This will not work for 53Kid's scans as they are really large so you will still have to scroll.

Virtualizard's and Basilone's scans are perfect on my monitor also. You guys have done a great job on these! I'm now inspired to do the same for my sets.
    Great job!

It seems like the scans are dependant on monitor settings. Perhaps it's time to bring this up to BJ. It would be nice to use the full screen option and scan through card by card. As it stands now, clicking on 'next' automatically reduces the viewer to the smaller size which requires us to reset to the full screen image.

As for my 1969 set, I do have different sized scans on there. I was experimenting trying to perfect the settings. Once I get something that works well, I'll rescan the entire set to a consistant size/resolution.

    Thanks for everyone's inputs.

I guess my "problem" is that i have a 21" flat screen and use a high resolution for graphics.
As an example, the pic that Basilone just posted is 6' x 10" on my screen and those 53 reprints make Satchell's head about life-size.

I wonder if there is a function that forces the "pop-up window" to stay entirely on the screen by automatically kicking the resolution down.

Not sure if that is an issue.

Looking at a 20" monitor right now and my display resolution is: 1152 X 864 pixels....so a scan of 311 X 525 pixels (the Murray Hall card shown below) will fit on the screen.

What is your current pixel resolution?

true; I only like to put 800x600 on my screen.
it's been a long timesince i messed around with that setting,
if i let 1024x768 on, there is no issue.........except that i will have to resize text and use bigger icon buttons. too bad it requires a restart in windows 2000 to change the settings.
it would be handy to toggle back and forth.
anyways, thanks for the refresher course in computers101 image

Yea..I just tried 800X600 and you are right everything is huge..heck I could read the message board from across the room.

The good news is that we found out what the issue is.

  • It's kind of funny to get home and read all of the comments. I was originally going to mention this last night in my post - now I wish that I had. I'm sure everyone on this message board has a different sized monitor with different settings. That's why I scan and resize the way that I do. I have a 15" monitor that I use for building and working on computers (takes up less space) and I originally checked the scans on this monitor when I first started uploading them to the registry. I found a good resolution and size that fit a 15" monitor with average resolution, and I've stuck to this ever since. I would assume that this is the "worst case scenario" of any member here, so I feel comfortable that at least 99% of those who wish to view my scans will be able to see them full screen without scrolling. I size every scan exactly the same - that's why you can click through my scans on the registry. The only aberration is horizontally formatted cards - I still use the same resizing, but I flip the card 180º which throws it off a little. Although I use a unique combination of hardware and software to create my scans, I'd be willing to offer any help that I can. Email me if you need help and I'll see what I can do.

Your right....on a 15" monitor if you use 800 X 600 resolution the scan does not fit all they way on the screen. If you use a 1024 X 768 resolution (much better IMO) then it shows up as the same size as an actual PSA slab.

I should also mention that if you use 800 X 600 on a 15" monitor....there will be a ton of web sites that will not fit left to right...not just set registry pop up windows.

800x600 does make e-bay (and other) images larger, which i prefer.
