Interesting gold coin: 1786-H Double Louis d'or

I thought this coin looks neat. Could anyone please tell me if this coin is real, and what's the approximate value of it? Thank you very much for your assistance.

  • Being far from an expert on these my opinion is only worth so much. But the coin has a cast appearance to it and the mark under the D in LUD is indeed bothersome as it may be an injection point in the mold for a cast coin.

If it is indeed real - I would place the value between $400 - $600.

Here is a real one from the pre-long beach sale. Do you see the difference in the real one from the other- much more tightly organized, better struck, clean and sharp look.image

  • Thanks so much for the information, gentlemen!! The difference seems like night and day. Even though there should be differences between the coins due to differences in the dies (and mintmarks), I still think Laurentyvan's coin looks more normal and the one I'm asking about has this unnatural look to it. I appreciate your input!
  • PLEASE DON'T BE DISTURBED BY THE GOLD DOT BELOW THE "D" IN "LUD". IT IS NORMAL TO DESIGNATE THE SECOND SEMESTER STRIKING(AS RELATED TO NO DOT BEING THE FIRST SEMESTER STRIKING). REFER: VICTORY GADOURY'S MONNAIES ROYAL FRANCAISES, PAGE 653. 1786-H MINT SHOWS BOTH 1ST AND 2ND SEMESTER BEING STRUCK. I HAVE BOTH 1ST AND 2ND SEMESTER EXAMPLES IN MY INVENTORY(NOT THAT PARTICULAR DATE-MM). HOWEVER, I CAN'T GIVE YOU ANY INFO ON GENUINENESS JUST FROM PHOTO. Welcome to the forum Chuckky! Your information is valuable and appreciated.

When I saw the coin my layman's opinion was based on the edge and rim which appears very bumpy and uneven, lettering on both sides of the coin also uneven, poorly struck, not even lined up in many cases- R of FR at 11:30 obverse too low with an extra dot after R; X of REX at 4:00 obverse just out there, floating by itself; the head is too high on the suspect coin; what denticles do show on the first coin are blunted and too close together-on the 2nd coin they are sharp and separated; the first coin's surface looks bumpy, almost porous.
    Again, strictly a layman's opinion.

edited to add: compare the 2nd chin and line of adams apple on both coins as well. Hair at top of figures also seem different.

I don't mean to derail this thread but Chuckky, can you give me a closer market value for this single 1786T d'Or? It is in an MS62 NGC slab. Thanks!

Cacheman, I don't think you're derailing the thread by posting awesome pictures of the presented gold piece! That one is fantastic! Deep P/L surfaces too I imagine.

  • THIS IS ANSWER TO THE CACHEMAN, I SOLD A SLABBED T-MINT SAME DATE NGC SLABBED MS64 FOR 600. I DIDN'T HAVE ANY ADJUSTMENT MARKS THAT YOURS HAS. LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE OBVERSE IN THE HAIR AND FACE OF LOUIS. AND THE REVERSE TWIN SHIELDS(FLEUR DE LIS AND CROSS OF NAVARRE). THE ADJUSTMENT MARKS CUT INTO THE RAISED DETAILS. BUT WITH THE PRICE OF GOLD GOING UP AND THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THOSE L'D'ORS, IT WOULD BE WORTH PROBABLY 400 TO 500.
