Actually, I finally gave up on dropping subtle hints and never getting what I really wanted. This year I gave her the dealers business card with my hand written notes on the back + showed her the tokens on their website before I left town.
Two years ago my hints on wanting coins for Christmas got me a watch with a Walking Liberty 50 cent piece as the face

Generally speaking I do not find them much of a distraction or much of a detraction as long as the piece is high quality. Sort of in the same category as laquered copper coins.
