Question for the dealers...

I started collecting cards when I was about 6 years old (1984 Topps was my first love). As I got into my teens, trading and selling cards was a huge hobby for me. It seemed back then that the dealers had a huge advantage over the individual collector. I remember when getting 75% of book value was the norm and if I wanted to make the sale or trade, I really had no choice but to take it. I lost interest when I went to college (baseball cards dropped in the priority list big time during those years!), and now as an adult, I'm getting back into it.
This was a long winded way to ask how card dealers fare in today's world of eBay, NAXCOM, online auction houses and so on. Is it harder to make a buck than it was a decade ago? Do kids even buy cards anymore (with the high prices)?
Thanks for reading and I look forward to any responses...
