Washington Quarter FUN thread

Now that the auctions have gone off, I was curious to know how people feel about the market now. There were certainly some STRONG prices paid for key dates, but some bargains as well.

The highlight has to be Patrick Mullen's 1932-D MS65 that sold for $32,400. However, only 49 of his 83 coins sold from this #3 collection. A marvelous collection, but with the reserves so high, no wonder a lot of the coins are going to the "buy now" prices.

I did indeed pick up a few pieces, but the elusive PQ 1932-D MS64 I was looking for, eluded me. I was the underbidder on lot #6308 which sold for a whopping $8,625. Most other 32-D's sold in the more manageable range of $4,500 to $5,500. I think this was definitely a PQ coin and sorry I couldnt obtain it. I even bid higher than I originally planned, getting a bit caught up in the frenzy. Through my research I found that this same coin was sold by Heritage in May, 2003 for a mere $4,600. Where was I then?

But I am sure there a more PQ 1932-D MS64's out there. And probably for less money. So my search continues as I upgrade others in my collection.

I bought a nice assortment of Wash quarters today, but, way less than I would have hoped to spend. IMHO, the strong reserves impacted bidding - even the start of bidding on various lots which often leads to record prices when bidders fight it out. Bidders came into the room (unaware of reserves) with loads of cash to spend on Wash quarters (I sat next to one such buyer) and walked out of the room with a tiny fraction of the coins they expected to compete for.

I hope the consignor reconsigns the nearly 50% of the collection that failed to sell to a future Heritage auction with greatly reduced reserves - he might be pleasantly surprised at how the coins perform image

  • Steve, I was at work but did manage to watch some of the auction. Seems like there were a few bargains to be had but unfortunately the few dates I placed serious bids all went for very strong prices. image I won't be sending any of my hard earned cash to Heritage this time around...

Craig, Congratulations on winning the 64p!image I personally thought it was one of the nicest quarters offered in today's auction. With that coin and that other beautiful sixties' date you recently aquiredimage you are well on your way to building one of the finest colorful sets ever. WOW!!!

  • I thought it was a great show for Washington Quarters. We didn't bid on any, nor did I pay particularly close attention to those that were being offered on the floor. We did however buy a nice little album deal from a dealer two days ago. Did a walk-through submission and are now the proud owners of a brand new, fresh and original 1936-D PCGS MS-67 with a little rainbow color to boot imageimage

I know you are sorry... as I was bidding up the coin you eventually won. I guess it was just the two of us and I AM disppointed that I couldnt obtain what appears to be a potential MS65. But that is the PQ coin I want for MY collection. Enjoy it and I hope if you resubmit it that it comes back with an upgrade.

My strategy was to pick the nicest one of the bunch and just concentrate on that one piece. Of course, since it was the last 32-D MS64 to be offered, I didnt have a chance to bid on any others.

Believe me, I am more sorry you were around bidding on it. I would have loved to have that one in my collection.

    Craig,

Congrats... that is a very SWEET coin!!

Craig, you're making me feel bad. If it is any consolation to you, this coin is as nice as Mullen's 65 -- you have a good eye. Secondly, the remaining 64's were so bad I tucked my paddle under my leg so there would be no mistake about what I bid on!!!!image

All said, I am happy with the results of the auction. While I certainly hoped all coins would meet the reserve, I didn't expect that to happen. I sold about half the set and will now work with Bob Zurick to sell some of the others and I will tuck a few away for a few more years. Had I sold them all I would have put the money back into other coins so tucking away a few nice Washingtons isn't a bad outcome. (And I sold enough to pay off the balance of the home remodeling which we just completed!)

Pat, congratulations on the coins you did sell! I think in six months or so, this market segement will be hungry for the rest of the quarters.

    wwq,
    Thanks for starting this thread.
Hang in there. Perhaps some day some nice member will offer you one for a reasonable price. That's how I've aquired most keys and top pops. Then you'll be zooming by me! image

    Jon,
Big Congrats here. Nice score from a dealer! Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy! image

    edited to add:
Rick, You and I will just have to see Craig's set some time. I'm sure that some day it will be be able to be displayed with the top "World Class" sets! image

    Pat:

Congrats on the successful sale of 1/2 of your set!

So why in the heck would you want to sell the other 1/2 if you have to buy more coins with the $ unless you are ready to move on to other series?

I have found that even if you move on, sooner or later you always come back "home."

So my advice to you.....keep the rest of them!

    Gang,

Thanks for the comments... and the answer to why I decided to sell my Washington set is... I love the chase of building a great set but once complete, I like to move on to another series, study that series and build a new set. Unfortunately, though I do put a fair amount of money into my collections, I don't yet have enough to keep my completed collections and still build new ones.

I have done this a number of times in the past. My first real set was Buffalo nickels which I sold in a NY auction about 20 years ago, more recently (5 years ago) I sold a great collection of 20th century error coins in high grade (included a 43 copper, 55 DDO 1c in MS 65 RD, a 1918/17 D Buffalo in MS 64, both 42/41 dimes, etc.) When I sold that set I had a start on the Washingtons and began building the set I just sold in the Heritage auction.

I have posted pics here in the past year of an 1892 proof set which is nothing short of spectacular (Morgan is a PCGS Proof 68 DCAM). Maybe I will begin to pursue similar 19th century cameo proofs.

This pattern of changing focus could go on for years and I will never get bored!!!

I think that's a great collecting method! Unfortunately, some of my coins I could never bear to sell....

Here's a pic of the 1892 Morgan dollar... you can see why 19th century cameos appeal to me.

I was in the house bidding as well. Didn't get near as many as I would have liked to. I was ready to
go for the 34D PQ 64, But then I saw Bob bidding and didn't even get a chance to raise my paddle.
I did pick up a few including the 63D 67. Nice coin Doug, I expect to see that 32D in a 65 holder someday.

I really wanted the 64P too but Craig must have wanted it more. I had to drop my paddle on that one.
I was prepared to pick up a dozen or so but the Reserves were a little to high for me... Hope to see
a few more of these down the line.

Nick did you buy that 1952-s ms 68?

I did not even bid on the coin.

was it nicer than the last one?

    It was the same quarter.

Nick are you joining the Washington party?

    I don't like crashing parties and I haven't been formally invited yet...image
But you never know... I did see a beautiful 34D at the show. I wonder if that dealer
still has it.... I may have to check on that. Couldn't get it out of my head image

Did anyone see the two 1934 Washington DDO'S that were graded by PCGS? One was a 65 and the other 66... are they quality coins and did they sell?

Hey, where were the clad issues (you know, 1965-98 segment)?? I wonder if and when
these coins will enter a Heritage Signature Sale.

There certainly doesn't seem to be much interest in them still.

I gotta believe their time will come.
