Can anyone tell me why this card came back altered?

I have no clue. The card looks fine, just in crappy condition.

    Recolored maybe?

No such details will spoil my plans...
  • That would have warranted a recolored grade though.
  • That's the thing I hate with PSA sometimes that I wish they would change. When they send a card back altered, they don't tell you what caused it to be considered to be altered. If I knew the card was altered, duh, I wouldn't submit it or buy it in the first place.

i dunno.. i sent in a 1966 topps mickey mantle.. i thought it was SWEET.. i predicted a PSA 7 and definitely not lower than a 6.. the centering was nice.. they sent it back "MISCUT, NOT HOLDERED".. what?!? I thought MISCUT was for cards badly off center or where there is part of another card printed on or something.. anyway, it was a letdown.. i would've guessed TRIMMED before i guessed MISCUT.. hmm.. a few threads ago, somebody showed a PSA 8 1975 Topps Nolan Ryan that was all crooked and crosseyed looking.. heh.. that rubbed salt in my wounds from the Mickey Mantle i sent in.. I tried to upload pics of the Mantle to this forum but it says my scans are too big.. i dunno how to make em smaller, so....

  • It hurts doesn't it? It feels like a big waste of money. I was trying to complete my set all PSA graded with this one. As for your scans, next time you scan them, either scan then at a lower size (i.e. 80% instead of 100%) or scan it with a lower DPI. That should work. To put my scans in the registry, I had to do this because they said my scans were to big. They then worked.

I know PSA previously would specify the reason a card was altered....years ago when I was a PSA customer (1997) I think, I brought a 1963 Carl Yastrzemski from Beckett auction. Submitted to PSA, I can't remember if it was on the label or the invoice, but it indicated the card was altered "recolored".

the miscut designation is for cards that are not rectangular. it would be nice if they specified why the card was altered.

    hahahaha
  • Here is the story of a miscut card.

(can't blame a guy for trying)

it seems that left side was miscut
at the factory (lowerleft corner juts out)
and it is Not trimmed, but not factory cut
correctly. This came from a conversation
with Charlie (the old, good customer
service rep that PSA let get away!)

Here are the threads about it
    thread 1
    thread 2

and the scan of the card itself

I am not sure what you mean by
    a recolored grade ?

There is not a "qualifier" for Recolored.
That is like trimming... it is simply ungradeable
because it means that someone used
a marker or something to hide a blemish
or scratch on the card. It is often done
on corners of black edged cards to hide
    chipping. (like 87 donruss)

  • Are you guys joking? That's not a diamond cut, it's very clear the left side is very altered.

Right around the middle of the card, you can tell there is a weird disposition, where it goes from one thickness, to another and to another again.

I remember that card quite fondly. I was sure it was at least a 6, maybe even a 7. I originally bought it in the mid-80's for a few bucks. I had no clue about trimming or miscuts of this nature, so the bottom-left corner totally escaped me. Even when I sent it in I didn't see anything wrong. Once pointed out to me, though, I learned quickly that miscut isn't just about "off-centeredness" gone awry, it could mean other things, too.

So this brings up an interesting question, suppose BKAH was to trim off the excess, leaving the card with perfect factory-cut dimensions, would that mean that the card was trimmed? Would PSA even be able to notice? Would anyone care?
  • Ricca, are you talking about my card, or the Pete Rose card?
  • Big Kid, what I meant by recolored grade is that if the card is recolored, they will send it back saying it was recolored, as they do when they say a card is counterfeit, miscut, etcetera.. I apologize. Calling it a grade was the wrong choice of words in this matter.
  • Gottabuyit,

It has got to be your card that I'm talking about. The Rose seems too big.

It looks more like someone had touched the card there a lot with their hand and wore away the left side. It doesn't really look altered, but you seem like the only one that has caught anything and that might be the reason it got the altered grade. Thanks.
