Help with scanner issue

Hey guys...

As I am not the technologically "with it," I though I'd ask you guys about this, seeing as how you have probably encountered this, oh, about a decade ago. Anyway...I just got a scanner and was having problems scanning some graded cards. The scanner seems to focus on the casing and not the card inside (especially with BGS cards). This of course makes the focus on the card blurred. Any serious answers with solutions to this? Thanks in advance for any help.

  • What type of scanner are you using? Are you getting light reflecting off the plastic and the card itself ends up just being background for the light reflection?
  • It's a cannon flatbed scanner. I wouldn't say that it is a reflection. It's more of the focus being on the case edging, such as the texture around the edges of a bgs case. Another example: I tried to scan a patch collection card (raw not graded) and the focus on the fibers of the patch was great but the image of the player's face (which is recessed in the actual card) is blurred. Is this just something that happens because the blurred part of the image is farther away from the glass of the scanner?
  • I have a Canon scanner as well and I run into the same problems.
I love it for any other type of card, but it doesn't do a very good job when it comes to graded cards.
  • Just for my knowledge...what's the best method of scanning images? Is it better to scan at a high dpi and then reduce the image size? Just wondering?
  • I would use a higher dpi if the card has a wrinkle so it can be easier to see it. The higher the dpi the more detailed your scan is.

As for canon woodson, they were always the biggest camera company in the world. I guess they haven't mastered scanners. What it souds to me is that the lens on the scanner can only focus on what is touching the glass. It may just be better for you to invest in a different company or a different scanner from canon. I've been using the same agfa snapscan 1818 since 1999 and it has been great.

Your problem could lie in the fact that you may have to do something different when you scan a PSA card for it to be focused better. Play around with it a few times and see if you can change anything.
