Question on a Spahn card.

What is the deal here? For the life of me I can't figure out why this went so high.

Link to Spahn Auction.

Thanks,
Jeff

  • Jeff,

There are two variations of this card. The scarcer variation has born in 31 with the 3 obscured. I believe that this is that variation.

You gotta love a hobby like this.

  • WOW! That makes no sense
at all. It should be a printing error
rather than a sought after "neat feature".

BigKid, I agree. But to a Spahn fan or 59 collector, that is a prize. I have no idea as to the rarity but I do enjoy the result. Some collector is very happy.

I am a '59 set collector. I know of the odity, but what made me wonder was why did PSA not mention it on the holder. They have for all the others. Oh well! I am happy I got a perfectly centered Brooks Robinson PSA 7 for my set tonight image This was the first well centered one of Brooks I have seen in a LONG time too.

There are actually 3 variations of this card- born 1921, 1931, and 1931 with the 3 partially obscured, in order of rareness/price. I found this one really hard to find, it took almost a year. I also found PSA rarely, if ever, notes them on the flip.
The other variations in the set were even tougher-316,321,322,336,362. However most sellers don't know the difference, and you can often pick them up for the common price when you do find them. I find stores your best bet on obscure variations- I found a few at Burbank Sportscards- as they have no idea what they have, and are often too lazy to learn about what they are selling.

Speaking of 1959's, the Master Set is available now on the registry that includes all the variations discussed above.

I am happy, although poorer now, that I picked up the very hard to find 1959 Topps Shantz PSA 8 from the same seller tonight for my 1959 Topps set. It will appear on the registry soon, maybe even tomorrow. The Shantz is one of the tough hombres in the set in PSA 8.

  • That's a bit too much for the Shantz. Not even centered. Be patient.
  • Hey Griffins- for some reason, I can't send you a PM.

Anyways, not sure if you'll see this, but shoot me a PM or email when you get a chance. I saw your comment about Burbank Sportscards and thought the same thing... those guys over there don't have a clue sometimes as to what they have - but they sure have a TON of stuff.
  • Probably his death had a factor in the bidding as well.

  • Thanks to this thread, just dug a NMMT+ (50/50 centering all the way around) #316 Lumeneti with the "Optioned to Chattanooga" notation on the back out of one of my binders and it is on it's way to PSA. On the pop report, this appears to be the rarer version but it seems that they've just started listing the variations. Anyone know which is rarer -- the variation without the "Optioned..." notation or the one with?

    Thanks!

    Kevin-
In my experience the versions without the option line were much harder to find. I don't know that the pop report is very accurate on these.
Now that you've sold off the Fleers and N28's what are you working on?

  • Hi Anthony,

Darn, oh well let's hope it comes back a 9! Right now I'm working on completing a couple of raw sets - 1952 Topps and 1961 Topps that just need a few upgrades, looking for the few remaining 1953 Bowman FB PSA 9s for my only graded set, and seriously weeding my collection.

    Thanks for the info.

    Cheers,
    Kevin
