How would you respond to this.

I was emailing a seller on ebay who was selling a modern set of 100 cards. It did not sell, "Probably because he wanted $23.00 for shipping the 100 cards using paypal and $15.00 for shipping for using a money order" So anyway, he is a Chicago seller. I email him stating I am interested but could I possible pick up the cards and save the $23.00 shipping fee. He said I could pick them up only if it was a cash deal and I paid him an extra five dollars. We went back and forth on this for a while and I said thanks but no thanks. He then sends me a email telling me that he thought I was interested and how I should not waste his time. I then shoot him back an email stating I was interested until he continually tried to gouge me for shipping even when I was going to pick the cards up.
I'm just courious how you guys would have responded to a seller like this. I wanted to be a total a$$ to this guy afer the "quit wasting my time" email but I restrained myself.
Just venting,
Glen

I agree with Stump - you were much nicer than I would have been.
I ran into the same situation about a year ago when I won a 64 Topps Giants set on eBay for $200. The shipping wasn't listed and I JUST ASSUMED that it would be between $6.50 and $10 plus insurance like everybody else. Well... When I got the invoice - the shipping was $25. I emailed the guy and asked him why his price was 2 to 4 times higher than anybody else. He lowered his shipping to $20 and I paid it begrudgingly. The package arrived - $8.00 WITH insurance and the binder was loose inside the Priority Mail box so several of the cards fell out. That was one of the handful of negatives I have ever left.
A month ago, I got an email from the same guy when a bunch of MY auctions closed and wanted to know WHO I WAS and WHAT NERVE I HAD putting him on my Banned Bidders list. His note DARED me to reply if I had the stones...
It was a PLEASURE sending that email back to him, reminding him of who I was and telling him that had I known he wanted to bid - I would have been happy to allow him to - but that shipping was $8.00 per graded card and sorry - I can't combine auctions!

I've had people come pick up items I've sold. My only requirement is cash or PayPal payment. No charge for shipping obviously. You responded appropiately Glen.

I recently won a PSA/DNA autographed Alex Rodriguez SP RC. S&H within the USA was $7.50 (I should have smelt a rat). I e-mailed the seller, outlining the various shipping options to Ireland, suggesting Global Priority ($5). He e-mailed back that S&H would be $22 - I expressed my amazement - "Sorry that was a mistake. I was looking at something else. Shipping to Ireland for a card will be $18" - I pointed out that the most anyone had ever spent sending a graded card to me was $13.90 (registered mail). I asked was he planning to hand-deliver it? - "The lowest we will be able to go is $13 dollars. Due to the cost of shipping supplies, and the rasing cost of handling and insurance."
I didn't want to lose the card (I need it for two Registry Sets) so I sent the money. I am now eagerly awaiting the card's arrival to see how much he actually spent. Needless to say I'm also sharpening a neg for him though I am concerned about retaliation ...

Sue,
I was upset with your response. You said add $5.00 for the pickup, (not free). I do sell on ebay and I am well aware of the fee's and policies. Like the ebay policy that states its not ok to charge more for using Paypal. I have always been respectful in our emails, whats this about wasting your time. NICE salesman-ship! Where do you get off?
Have a nice life.

Her Email:
>hey glen what do you think i ship for free(would have hand delivered for free of cash transaction was involved not paying with a credit card)they take $12.50 right off the top, then it costs $14.85 to ship insurded with signature the set comes in a binder were do you see i am making anything i have about $250.00 not including all the shipping and handling purchasing these chromes so why dont you do a little thinging, maybe you should try selling on ebay and you'll get the idea of fees its free to bid not free to sell,i was not trying to be smart i am just a dealer on a fixed income trying to make a little extra thanks sue
I'm Still trying to be nice,
Glen

Glen,
While I agree with most that you were much nicer than you probably should have been,I think that you are doing the right thing.I know it sounds corny but I try to live by the addage"What comes around, goes around"and I am sure that this seller will eventually get theirs.Call it karma or whatever, but it does seem to work out that way.I would continue to be nice as well as getting this sellers e-bay out so that board members can put her on their blocked bidders list.I would also report her to e-bay or let someone on the board do it as they have offered to do.I might even send her a link to this thread. That might make for an interesting read for her.

For ebay bidders. For the month of January, mention this post and win an auction with me and you will get free shipping for any amount of items you win.
<< <i>I've got a better one than that. I purchased 4 PSA graded cards from a fellow set registry member whom I've even talked to on the phone before and in his auction it said $5 shipping. I just assumed he would combine shipping and then would charge me whatever insurance was. WRONG!!! He wanted $5 shipping per card and then wanted $5 more for insurance per card. The total for the 4 cards was something like $32x.xx and he wanted $40 total to ship them insured! I went round and round with him for days and he wouldn't budge so I just said ship all four together, insure the highest valued one for $200 and then I sent him $25 for shipping and insurance. I can't believe I didn't neg him but I know he would have neg'd be back. >>

I know it's a modern seller but look at the shipping price in their discription. $10.00 dollars more for paypal. This is the seller that said I was wasting their time for trying to save shipping costs.
I did not want to be an A$$ but the seller is chicagosportscollector, I tried to be peacefull but it did not work.
Thanks,
Glen
Thanks for the heads up on the cards - your check arrived too (now if it will only CASH!!!!)
Alan,
Thats a pretty good idea on just raising shipping costs to EJ. Now that I've heard it - I can do it to and just say "uh, sorry... but Acowa told me to do this...". Extra cash and I don't have to take the blame!
Or, if I wanted to be REALLY sneaky... I could just state that shipping prices triple when shipping to a PO BOX.
Of course, this would have all worked better had I not talked about it online in front of everyone...

Did someone already mention the seller id? It'd be nice to know so I'd know to stay away or even block it from my list of potential bidders (not that this person would buy anything I have).
This rule goes for emails too. Trading emails with an unreasonable seller (or bidder) becomes a waste of time and money. Move on and block them.
As for those sellers who don't post shipping, I either email the seller for an approximate cost before bidding or I always assume the worst. There are enough good sellers on Ebay (and these boards) that you don't need to get hassled with the jerks.
He doesn't sell a lot but occasionally he does sell Chicles. Hi grade Chicles are so hard to come by that if he did offer a card I needed it would be a tough decision not to bid but I probably wouldn't.
Thanks,
Glen
<< <i>Thats why i still like SCD ads and shows the best. >>
GLYN - Because of an occasional retalitory Negative fb, thats why you like shows & ads more?
I guess I'm the opposite as eBay brings the collecting world to my computer, I have no neg's in thousands of transactions in the 5 years that I've been on it, and if I were to get 1 here and 1 there, I still wouldn't change the course...jay

It seems easier to scan and post a card on eBay then pricing a few thousand cards and hope that they sell.
I do enjoy going to shows as a buyer though. Do you still set up at Lynn's shows in the Lehigh Valley?
Are you gonna set up at the Nat'l this summer? ..jay
