This auction was the subject of an earlier thread. It is an interesting piece that at first glance looks like an S-2 that has had the hair completely, and amaturishly reengraved. But then you look at the date. All of the rest of the lettering seems to be perfect or near perfect for an S-2 in shape and placement, but the date is completely wrong! Most notably the 1 is the wrong size and style and the 9 has a narrow oval loop at the top while on the genuine the top loop is round, almost circular.
what is even worse is the fact that what 31 bids have come thru ??- that my friends make me puketh. How does a sane individual place ANY bids at all with such a blatant negative front?
Other than the most extreme obvious, the planchet looks too perfect. Perfectly smooth, perfectly brown, not too common on chain cents. As Condor101 pointed out, the date looks especially terrible.
Although the eBay coin looks tooled to all get out, it has many of the charateristics of the real one. Look a the T in Liberty, very close. Does anyone think the eBay coin is real?
Aw gee, what would make you think this was phony? The wrong shape numerals in the date that are sitting in "valleys"? The wrong letter positions? Or the fact that a retooled modern repro failed to reach reserve in a private auction? You guys are too tough.
