Ebay competition

Anyone know what's going on with Naxcom.com and its sportscard auctions? I haven't spent any time monitoring it over time, but if anyone has, can you comment on whether it appears to be growing? What's good about it? What's bad about it? Does it appear to have any future?

  • Naxcom has its place, but it won't be a competitor to ebay in its current form.

I have only had 2 transactions through them, both worked out pretty well. I bought two Bowman's Best Steve McNair RC's through two seperate sellers. I posted a buy price of $3.00 each (Ebay had been going for about $6-8, not sure now). To me, you can get lucky and find an item cheaper, but don't count on it. The one good thing is that they regulate the shipping charges and they dont have a listing fee.

Naxcom is mostly high retail. Dealers place sell prices and minimum acceptable offers that are no less that the prices listed on their websites.

koby - and then you place a buy offer, and then dealers (or weekend warrior-types, or just collectors who see an opportunity to turn cards into cash easily) can decide whether to sell the card to you at that price. I have purchased cards through NAXCOM from major dealers (David Kjeer being the best known) from their acceptance of a buy offer I made that was often less than half of their sell offer (and usually well under SMR).

Nick- I just looked at the Naxcom site again. Many of the dealers on Naxcom have their sell price and also a minimum amount that they would accept for an offer. These minimums are not far from the sell price and sometimes exceed the prices on their websites. I think these guys are simply trying to use Naxcom as advertisement for their cards rather than real attempts to sell their card. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but if I wanted to pay high retail, I would just look at their prices in the SMR or on their website and pay full value. Koby
  • I posted a sell order on a few boxes and there were a hundred different stipulations on fees and regulations that I couldn't follow. So I called their customer service and asked for a summation of what was going on and not even their customer service rep knew what the terms meant. Now that's some customer service. The only contribution that Naxcom has made to the hobby is that Angie Everheart red-head chick that they have selling accounts at their Southern California shows (someone out there on these boards has to know what I'm talking about, right?). She got me to sign up at the Airtel Plaza show. I thought she mighta' liked me, but after I saw her do those little subtle flirting things like putting both hands on guys shoulders and giggling at all of our bad jokes, I came to realize that she must be working on commission. Oh well.

They use the same tactics to sign up new members at East Coast shows as well. I remember at The National they had a bevy of beautiful women luring you in with friendly smiles and waves. Even at the shows in White Plains, I remember talking with a pleasant young girl who was a Naxcom rep. They at least know what sells, right?

koby - the "minimum price they would accept" is the price that if no one buys it at the higher price during the time it's up on their Vintage special listings, they will automatically agree to sell it for. Put in a lower buy offer and see what happens. I have gotten cards at far below SMR that way.

Nick- Thanks for the info. I misunderstood what the minimums meant. There are some great cards on Naxcom so I may try them out this weekend. Koby
