2003 Silver Proof Set mintage...

I was under the impression that the MAX mintage for the 2003 silver proof set was susposed to be 1,000,000.
This weeks Numismatic News shows the mintage of 1,009,601 and they are still on sale at the mints website.
Anyone else remember the 1,000,000 figure?

The mintage will likely be whatever maximizes the U.S. Mint's profit.

  • Anyone know when the mint normally sells out of the silver proof sets?

  • Aren't they still offering them on the web site? I may order a few more to see if I can get some with a decent 3 on the Lincoln and the correct COA in the set!image

Seems like sell-out occurs in about April the following year.

The thing is..... do you want to buy someone's return?

I believe that, over the past couple years, the mint sold out of silver proof sets in mid to late FEB. Looks like about 1,300,000 will be sold this year.....the most so far I think.
  • Why doesn't the mint have a set limit to the number they mint? I know they make more money with the more they sell, but I guess they dont care too much about flooding the market with too many.

Like barracude said....profits. I dont believe the mint cares about flooding the market.
  • So with the increased mintage, do you think these will go the way of the 2000 sets? I mean, even the 2002's are selling for more than them.

I am curious because I am considering purchasing 50 sets to sell in a year or more. Who would have thought the 1999's would go for so much now. With the 2002's going for $60+, the people that bought those doubled their money in a year. Not too shabby.
