Dr Terner raised the bar...

... for the FUN attendees who gladly offered to help me in locating a top notch 1901 sovereign to complete my British 1901 set. I've just concluded a deal on the Terner 1901 half-sovereign , a PCGS MS64 and I really wonder if his 1901 full sovereign will be offered in FUN, or at least a similar quality one. Well boys, are you up to the challenge? image

Sorry no scans , I don't have the coin in hand yet. When I will, I promise to post new pictures of at least 4 coins that have been upgraded from uncirculated to rainbow uncirculated. image

PCGS MS64 HALF SOV Sounds nice. Can't wait to see images.

Speaking of Terner there is going to be another auction of some of his stuff. I just found out they are going to start working on the catalog for it at the end of this month.

Yes. I've heard more Terner material is slated for 2004, but I'm not sure what or the extent of the offering at this moment.....stay tuned.

Dimitri, I'll consult my notes on those two pieces (if I made any) which I viewed at the sale. At least I can probably give you an idea of how that 1/2 sov. MS64 "scaled" against the other 64s which were offered. I wish you good luck with finding a matching sov.

Thanks Mac. I can't find the records of that Goldberg sale, although I remember having them printed and placed somewhere. There's certainly a premium for the pedigree and the funny thing is that the coin will be placed in an Airtite wooden box similar to cosmic's . I'll claim the official " Slab Destroyer" Darkside title for this, but I'll keep the insert.image I just hope that these FUN boys of ours will make me proud with an equally nice coin without the pedigrees and premiums image

I have the catalog and that was lot 406. Too bad all they have is a small B&W photo of it.

    Price relized was only $230.00image

Great Britain. ½ Sovereign, 1901. Victoria Old Head. S-3878; Fr-397; KM-784. Last date of this series, for Victoria passed away only 22 days into the new century. However, many pieces of this date were obviously saved as mementos. Still, this one is especially nice. Bought in 1982. PCGS graded MS-64.
    Estimated Value $100-125.

From the photo, it looks like a weak strike.

Weak schmwick, it's mine now !image They're quite tough these sovs and half sovs in such condition and the estimate was way off the mark. This is a normal half sov, not a proof with a 4 digit mintage, but to locate it in such a grade is more tricky I think. Was that the hammer price Bill?

And here's the truth from the description of the 1900 sovereign (previous lot, MS63)

"Long considered just bullion coins, these late Victorian issues are decidedly difficult to find choice and absolutely Mint State."

Maybe Dr. Terner held back the late date gold which grades MS66/67!! imageimage

Also, any PCGS MS64 VOH half sov. in that sale has marks which are non-consequential. Only the MS66 piece truly outclassed the others. Those MS64s were deliniated only by a stray hairline here and there.

Ask yourself this. If they were that easy to obtain, why didn't Terner have all MS65 to MS67s in the Jubilee and Old Head runs?? After all, lightside Liberty quarter eagles can be had that nice! image

Answer: They barely exist at all.

I'll beg, and borrow against every note I can scrounge up, if you deliver to me a no-questions date run (1887 - 1901) of half sovs. and sovs in MS65/66. Oh yeah, I'll gladly pay 3x Spinks '04. image

    Dimitri,

I don't see a 1901 Sovereign listed in the Registry for Terner.

    Link to Terner's Victoria Sovereigns

Here is the 1901 MS-64 Terner Half Sovereign:

If so, you'd better hope I don't see it first! imageimage

...or that I can't afford it, which is a pretty likely scenario. image
