Complete* 1967 Set - posting the results

I've basically completed my 1967 Topps baseball set. The asterisk (*) means I'll passively upgrade as time goes by, but I'm satisfied with it in it's current form. It's been at 100% for several weeks, and I'm down to my last card in PSA 7. No shame, either. It's #20-Orlando Cepeda, his MVP year. I've been promised a Cepeda in PSA 8 by both the guy immediately above me and the guy immediately below me in the standings, when they come across an extra one. So I'm confident at least one of them will come through, eventually. Since I'm done, I decided to open my set for viewing to any who are interested. Some of the 9's have scans, but not all.

1967 SET Currently #2 in the NATION

Thanks to the following for helping me along the way:

Myself (raw cards submitted) 154 (25% of the set)
Superior Auction Dec. 2002 149 (24%)
Dan Markel (currently #1) 51 (8%)
Steve Pekovich (bauerfan) 52 (8%), mostly raw high #'s four years ago that graded 8 or 9, not included in the 154 total above.
Dslsports 20
Zukeepr 16
Wayne Ellis 13 (all 9's in a single private transaction)
Ecmsi, Inc. 11
Alan Cowart 7 (mostly trades, including one round-tripper, #571-Larry Sherry; remember that one Alan?)

Others from whom I bought at least one, and up to 10 cards from (ebay names if I don't have their real names):

121Northshore, Alan Munson, Andiehaley, Andy Madec, Brian Aponte, Poway Sportscards, Dave Jacobs (trade), Fred Taylor, gmcassidy, grabelow, Gwo Shih, HeavenSent, icaancards, jdduck, jreigner, kaisercards, Bob Lins, Kevin Statz, Kit Young, Mark Iradenko, moniz, mecbto, Krukcards, Frank Klopp, Dave Kjeer, Paul Mount (trade), Neil Zarrella, on-the-mark, Perry Schwartzberg, Paul Sjolin, Paul Stark, psa1947, rickfanc, quality cards, Roger Neufeldt, Scottsdale Cards, Will Hays, Joe Taureillo, skcollectibles, skerbe, spcollectibles, sportscardzz, ssworld, tbgyhn, vsi and zeder4.

As is usually the case, I've ended up with a nice, but lesser condition second set of 1967 Topps. It's not registered. It's 88% complete with 11% graded, two PSA 6, two PSA 8oc and 62 PSA 7. The key cards (Big Three) are Seaver (PSA 7), Carew (6) and Mantle (6). Other 7's include Wills, Palmer, Killebrew, Perez, Brooks Robinson (oc), Carlton, Shannon, Brock, Drysdale, Mazeroski and Kaline. I'm missing 74 cards, mostly commons and mostly highs (32). Key stars missing are Red Sox Team, Colavito and Cash.

I'm torn between finishing it out or selling it off. The most likely option would be to keep the Big Three, sell off the remaining 7's and replace them with raw cards to end up with a nice raw NM+ set.

Let this post be a solicitation for advice on what to do with the 2nd set, including an entertainment of offers.

    Great job Toppsgun!

You're thinking of selling it off? Say it ain't so!
  • No, not THE #2 set, just thinking of selling of my personal #2 (backup set). Dang, I nearly had a coronary there.
  • Congrats on the set TG.
My advice would be "depends on what else is going on".
Let's face it, if building it once was fun, then building it twice should still be a good time. If you have a list of twenty other sets waiting to be built that are underfunded then sell away. If the pending list is short, then why not try it again.
Last I checked I had three 66 BB in the top ten and three 66 FB in the top six (as well as a multiples in several other FB years). Build what you like, and when you finish, there are no rules that say you can't do it again.
    Fuzz
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.

    Mike,

I gave Dan a Cepeda 8 at the first "National summit meeting". I bought it from Maraya for $25. If I find one...you gotta come to the National dinner to pick it up image (there's always a catch!)

    Regards,

    Alan

PS And I do remember the Sherry deal...I never forgave you!!!

  • TG:

I will also echo congrats - as a guy sitting at about 95% complete for some time now I can first hand appreciate the accomplishment and hope to one day get there myself!

As far as the 2nd set goes I would suggest selling it off and starting and using the proceeds to start a different set - although not a frequent contributor to this board, I have learned a great deal about this set and the players in it from other 67 collectors and believe that starting a different set in a different decade might be the way to go - just an opinion.

    Congrats again

Hey joedel - I bought my FIRST EBAY transaction (and perhaps one of my first 4? psa cards ever) from you back in March of 99 - a 1965 Mets Team Card in PSA 8. The card was SHARP and you were a fantastic seller! Can't believe that was almost 5 YEARS AGO. Anyway, I ended up giving the card to my friend when he broke his arm. He resubmitted it and it came back a 9!!!! That son-of-a-gun. Anyway, saw your name and it brought back memories. Hope you are doing well!

    Eric "uniship"

ps - here was your feedback for me:

joedel( 1389) Mar-11-99 14:26:36 PST Praise : Quick payment. Fast emails. An asset to EBAY! Welcome aboard!
  • Thanks everyone. I updated the scans this morning to load all my 9's. I guess in 3 days they'll be viewable. How easy with high speed internet. The bottleneck is scanning them into my hard drive and keeping them below 100K size.

Uniship, what are you talking about?? Never mind. I guess you edited it out.
  • toppsy - Congratulations; this is a sweet cleanly laid out set. I would recommend the quest of building it to anyone.
Best of Luck on future endeavors.

    Awesome set !!

Do you have an idea of how much you invested to complete it?
How does that number compare to that SMR value of a PSA 8 set?

Complete 1967 set in PSA 8 lists in Dec '03 SMR at $17,314.

Yours is rated 8.09. Very curious about the dollars need to assemble such a set.
    Nate
  • My overall cost basis will remain undisclosed. But I had a great head start by owning the majority of it from my childhood collection. We moved in the early summer of '67 to a smaller town, so my cards from that year had less handling. Plus, that was near the end of my collecting years. Golf & girls soon became the target of my allowance.image Upgrades have occurred (both in cards and girls), but when you have the "old" card to sell or trade, it helps.

I've been extremely fortunate in buying a couple of large lots, one graded (Superior auction) and one raw (high # Pekokvich deal). That certainly beats the excruciating, card-by-card assembly others have tried. I'd recommend making a big start or at least a series of lump sum buys if your desire is to undertake this set.

One other comment. My grading submissions for this set more frequently got favorable smiles from the graders than the other years I collect. I can't explain it and it wasn't rampant, but at least I avoided the "grader of death."

    Edited to add:

At least two dozen cards in the set cost me double SMR or more. My Top 10, most expensive, at triple SMR or higher:

    2 HAMILTON
    13 SPARMA
    26 PRIDDY
    37 WISE
    41 HORNER
    72 KORINCE/MATCHICK-Tigers RC
    106 HUNDLEY
    363 JOHNSON
    492 TEAM PIRATES
    572 DEMETER
  • acowaacowa Posts: 945 ✭✭
    TG,

You bailed me out on the Sims card...big time. Normally, that would be on the 3X + list. I don't understand the Hundley card being so expensive. The Demeter card is a killer (I don't know of a tougher high number). That's honestly the only card that I remember ever outbidding Joel on. There are some cards that I look back and regret paying too much for. At $175...my Demeter wasn't one of them.

    Regards,

    Alan

  • Alan,

I had two raw Sims both grade 8. I got one, you got the other (in trade for my Larry Sherry). You originally traded me several cards for the Sherry. I think Dick Bennett, Al Dark, Pete Mikkelsen, Bo Belinsky and Larry Dierker were involved in some way. We both probably came out OK.

As for Hundley, it was an ebay win 7/13/03. I was out of town, so it was likely a snipe that someone else also had their eye on. That's the breaks.

Demeter is flat undervalued at an SMR of $25.
