Tug McGraw Loses To Brain Cancer

He was only 59. The world will be a more boring place and the game was all the better for his presence.

I have several bats with his autograph on it and next to each signature he drew a smiley face. It's hard to think of him and not smile myself.

    RIP Tug !!!

On a side note...as long as people are going to overpay for cards when a player dies....people will keep listing them to cash in.

That's not great news to wake up to. He was the author of probably my single most exhilarating sports moment, the final strikeout of the 1980 World Series. I've seen his follow-through and leap into the air probably 50 times over the years, and each time I am transported back to being 10 years old, laying on the floor of my grandparents' living room in south Philadelphia. A great character and a fine player.

    RIP TUG!

Am I missing something here? The final price and all the bids over $20 for a .50 cent card. I had
to look at this three times to see if I was missing anything. How sad and weird?

  • Tony,
People do stupid things when someone dies, or gets drafted, etc. Like pay that much money for a nrmint raw card. If I were shallow enough I'd go dig out all my Tug cards and put them on ebay and try to make a profit off of Tug's death.

    Doug,

I thought the same thing. I bought a whole 78 Phils team set in mint condition for $4 a few
months ago. I thought it would be nice to replace my childhood team set that had some miles
on it. But this price for the Tug card is crazy. It's funny how we miss people once they are gone
    versus just not around....

    Wow..that 1978 Topps Tug card ended at $36 !!!!!
  • For me, growing up in NJ a Met fan, Tug asked me to believe "Ya Just Gotta Believe" and I did. The Mets and my Little League Team went to the World Series in consecutive years. I was a left hander pitcher for my team just like Tug. The Mets of 1969 were magic. There will be no greater sports feeling than what a coming of age 10 year old feels when the home team, of the sport he lives and breathes every waking minute, wins it all.
    Thanks for the memories Tug.

  • One of my first baseball memories was Tug and his "You Gotta Believe" quote. At 10 yrs. old, it made me a Mets fan for life and it now makes me long for the days when baseball was played more for fun and less for money (or so it seemed to me as a kid in the early 70's).

Sometimes a player's greatness is measured more by his actions, and less by his stats. Thanks for the memories, Tug!
  • Tug McGraw quotes :

“I have no trouble with the 12 inches between my elbow and my palm. It’s the 7 inches between my ears that’s bent.”

“Ninety percent I’ll spend on good times, women and Irish Whiskey. The other 10 percent I’ll probably waste.”

“ Ten million years from now, when the sun burns out, and the Earth is just a frozen iceball hurtling through space, nobody’s going to care whether or not I got this guy out.”

“I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf.” (after being asked to compare artificial turf and grass)

    “Ya Gotta Believe!”

Well we did Tug, thank you for being part of our lives…..
