I just got my e-mail and was composing a thread for the Open Forum. It is posted there as well with a full text of the e-mail.

  • I knew it!! After making those enhancements, smells like they're in for another round of increase. image

10 day auction will increase by 100% from 10 cents to 20 cents!

The only thing I like is the insertion fee credit for NPBs.

The good news seem to be for eBay Stores as fees are dropping from $.05 plus $.10 surchage to $.02 plus $.02 surchage for some insertions/durations.

I think it is interesting that the price ranges have been broken up so that now the highest insertion fee is almost $5 ($4.80) for anything starting over $500. With $.01 to $.99 being a new category for the old fee of $.30 that applied to $.01-$9.99, I will be starting all my auctions at $.99 from now on.

I bought some ebay stock at around 42.00 a year or so ago, it is now at about 63.00.

They must take care of us owners, and pay for the goofy TV ads.

More provocative, may be the possibilty that all internet transactions will be taxed, by state and/or federal bodies at sometime in the not too distant future. Not just dealers with a taxID, but anyone who sells via the net. Paypal, credit cards and the like are the easy ones to regulate, however there is enough information and trace programs already in place, to monitor the proper reporting of income if stonger more realistic laws come about.

Ebay can increase its fees by 300 percent and we would all still use ebay. Unfortunately, there is nothing comparable. Yahoo stinks and auction houses charge way too much for consignments.
  • I pray to the God of all that's holy that someone will PLEASE begin a realistic competition to EBAY.

With their sorry customer service, but a virtual monopoly, they can continue to jack-hole everyone.

Could Beckett auctions succeed as a competitor to eBay in the sports cards and memorabilia field?
They have a strong brand name and an existing site.

Another thing is that people will just charge a little more on there auctions now, or just a little more
on shipping. Which some of them charge some outragous prices as it is.

No more 10 day auctions for me.

Anyone thinking what I am thinking......just raise my S & H , and pass it along to the customer. Thats how big business does it, isn't it?

What do you see as "realistic"? In a perfect world what could this competition offer that would make your collecting experience better in any way? Could they overcome what we have all grown to accept from eBay because of the lack of alternative options?
  • What tends to happen when there is a monopoly (or a near monopoly in Ebays case)? Of course, they raise prices. What else is new.

I also pray that there will be meaningful competition. It's inevitable at some point that there will be. No company is immune from getting sloppy, arrogant or just plain greedy.

Someone at CLCT needs to look into it. It would take both a publicly traded company (for capital) as well as someone with a good reputation in the marketplace.

How many of us would really take our chances with an alternative to eBay? Wouldn't exposure and sheer volume of offered auctions be weaknesses to start? Would we take the chance with selling on a new site knowing that our auctions might not get the same exposure as they would on eBay which would lead to lower prices? Or would we use it primarily as a buying outlet to take advantage of lower prices from those who took the chance with selling?
  • Ebay is no where near a monopoly. To be a monopoly you have to be the ONLY one in that business, such as Rockerfeller with oil in the 1800's. He became a Billionaire, with a "B" because he was able to eliminate the competition by selling oil so cheap, his competition could not compete, and he bought them out one by one until he controlled everything. Then he chose the prices he wanted. He then became a billionaire. He was the reason there was a push for anti monopoly and anti trust (when you own all the stock in one company) laws in the United States. Ebay is not monopoly because Yahoo, amazon and others have auction sites. The problem is actually not ebay that makes ebay seem like a monopoly, it is that most of the internet auction buyers choose ebay. What needs to be done is start an auction site that is attractive to buyers and go on a massive advertising front to let everyone know of the site. The sellers will then follow. Remember, ebay didn't become big over night. it happened over a few years.

There is nothing inherently illegal about a monolopy. It happens all of the time. Most of the cable networks were monopolies until competition was introduced a couple of years ago.
It is illegal to use a marketing leading or monopolistic position to stifle competition. That is when the FTC gets involved. Microsoft had 85% share of the market, but weren't sued by the FTC until it was proven that Microsoft tried to shut out Real Media, AOL, and Netscape from the market.

Ebay has done nothing illegal. They just have the best product on the market. Even though the fees are up, at least they have tried to improve the product over the years. I would rather have Ebay over the losers at Yahoo that have done nothing to improve their auctions.
    Mike
  • The cable and phone companies were monopolies allowed by the federal government so that we don't have tons of cables and phone wires all over the place, but the Federal Controled the maximum they can charge. The phone company in Verizon's case, is still a monopoly in one way. They own all the phone wires where ever their service is. The Federal government allowed them this because they did not want a bunch of different companies tinkering with the phone lines, so they let Verizon stay in charge. If you have MCI, At & T, etc, and have a physical problem with your phone line. Verizon is the company that will come to repair it.
Microsoft was not a monopoly, they never were. What Microsoft did was illegally eliminate the competition, according to the anti trust lawsuit. They did not eliminate the competition by just being a better company. They eliminated netscape by giving MSN for free. Netscape couldn't make any money because people that bought computers programmed by microsoft, used microsoft products. That's why Netscape had to sell out to AOL.

  • Anyone know what's going on with Naxcom.com and its sportscard auctions? I haven't spent any time digging through its site, but if anyone has monitored it over time, can you comment on whether it appears to be growing? Does it appear to have any future?

    Gotta,
What is your point about Microsoft? I said exactly the same thing. Do you like to show everyone how smart you are?
    Mike
  • we should all just get used to it. this is not going to be the last price increase by a long shot. there will be many many more and some will be much larger increases than this little one. yes it stinks, but we are not going anywhere and we all know it.

ND calm down. Do you get confrontational like this all the time?

Peter, you are right. If everyone really wanted to get ebay to lower their prices, stop using them. When they lose the customer base, they will have to do something to bring them back.
