which light setup do you prefer on these photo's?

I just need a little help from forum members as to which sets of images they prefer. I loved shooting this coin-it has such a nice coloration! Things are beginning to come together viv a vis image sizes and resolution, now just the lights...

1st set: 2 lights about a foot and a half away

2nd set: 1 light about a foot away

In this particular case I would say set one...light from the top right. I say this only because each coin design must be handled differently. I usually take an image of obv/rev with the light from 10:00, 2:00. and 4:00 and then decide which is capturing the devices the best.

edited to add that the lights may be in the same position for these two images and you are only talking about the exposure, but the statement about position above is still valid.
  • I'd go with the 2 lights, #1.

I like #1 better. I need to get a second light source.

I like #1 too; it offers more light and a better picture of the coin. However, I like how #2 shows the toning at the top and around the edges of the coin.

I am also still trying to figure out what lighting set-up to use. That and colors are my big hurdles, I'll tak a pic and think it looks great only to have someone ask "why is that coin red?"

I am red-green color blind, might be part of the reason I am not a big fan of copper.

  • Wow, I wonder what a Canadian flag looks like in Aethelred's eyes.
  • Michael, since you don't like copper that much, I'll keep them for you. image

    Both look fine to me.
