You're lighting from just one side, right?

Haven't figured the camera out yet Phil. Well, really I haven't taken the time to load the the software on the computer yet. I did follow the directions you posted in another thread and took a few shots. Overall not bad for a first attempt. I was taking photos of P-L Canadian Dollars and I got a reflection of the lense in the photo. I've gotta figure out the lighting.

I tried Phil's suggestion of just plain old regular light bulbs. 1 75 watt and 2 60 watt

  • Normally I just use 2 lights, sometimes just one. It all depends on the coin, sometimes I want it drowned in light, other times I use shadow to my advantage to highlight certain aspects of it.

My lighting setup is VERY crude, this isn't an understatement. I have a night table beside my bed with 4 legs, one light is afixed to one leg and I use the other one for whatever purpose. I essentially take my pictures on the floor.

How far away from the coin do you set the lights Phil? At what angle?

You take some kickass photos, if I can do half as well some day I'll be happy!

  • The lights are about 5-6 inches away from the coin, usually. The light is pointing at the coin at a 45° angle, usually and I'll position the other light wherever looks best.

One more question Phil, what color background do you shoot on?

  • I place my coins on a white sheet of paper with those circle/square guidelines printed on it from my previous tutorial.
