First four of 10 coins in... I'll take my spanking now ... submission 3112752 received today:

Contest guesses same as my comments:

    2 -- 1967 SMS 1 cent: MS-67 RD (Far superior to my current PCGS MS-67 example, MS-68)
    3 -- 1965 SMS 5 cents: MS-66 CAM (A raw Russ-pedigreed coin; near DCAM, a little shiny atop Tom's wig, MS-66 CAM)
4 -- 1966 SMS 5 cents: MS-66 CAM (PCI 67 Ultra Cam crackout; going back in, this is DCAM all day, MS-66 DCAM)
6 -- 1965 SMS 25 cents: MS-66 (Totally laughable; PCGS 67 crackout; wonderous mirrors, no doubt MS-67 CAM, headed back)

I inadvertently listed the '65 SMS quarter as Line 5, when it was actually Line 6...

Thanks again, Don, for the contest!

There are a couple coins PCGS is going to see again - and again - and again, until they get it right.

hmmmm. image if the above statement is true, what exactly would be their motivation to "get it right"?

Sounds like they already have a great plan to keep getting paid to grade the same coin, over and over!

    hey Don

we need some kind of a participant list and a score. are we starting out at a score of 100 and working backwards?? Russ, you seem to have held current to the PCGS Contest trend that collectors will tend to undergrade!! am i right to see your score as 92?? hey Brian, i see you at 97 with seven coins left. that 2003-D is indeed tough, i think the planchets were either flawed to begin with, the coins mishandled after striking or the strikes seem incredibly weak.

i'll try to do an occasional TTT during the day to help late entrants.

Hey Jared, You need to assign line numbers or something so we know which coin you are guessing which grades on!

we need some kind of a participant list and a score.

Al and all, I'll post the comprehensive list tomorrow, along with the contestant's progress so far. Thanks to all who participated. This is a fun exercise, and I hope it will prove useful.image

OK, here were the rules David used in the World Series to
    refresh everyone's memory.

Everyone starts out with 100 points. Points are deducted as follows...

    Miss a coin by one grade...minus 1
Miss a coin by two or more grades...minus 2.5
Miss a designation (PL, CAM. FBL, etc)...minus 1.5
    Miss a grade/no grade call...minus 1.5
Miss a counterfeit...minus 2.5 (not saying there will be counterfeits, but there might be)

    Highest score wins!

wow, if this is the scoring scale i'm toast. how about a .5 credit if the designation is correct? ie) you guess 68dcam, it grades 67dcam--instead of a 1pt deduction you only take a .5pt hit. however, if it comes back 67cam you take the full monte. I suggest this b/c if a coin has a designation, you're guessing 2 distinct criteria, of which you have 2 possible ways of losing points. However, if you're submitting circ or coins without a possible designation, you can only lose on one criteria....the grade.

Edited to correct math, thanks Russ.

<< <i>.5 credit if the designation is correct? ie) you guess 68dcam, it grades 67dcam--instead of a 1.5 deduction you only take a 1pt hit. >>

In that scenario, it would only be a one point hit, just the grade itself.

I agree with your premise, though. We who stick our necks out and submit coins with designators should be rewarded for having balls. image

Thanks Russ, math corrected. This point system works great if everyone is grading the same coins...however, with each person guessing grades on diff coins, the playing field may need a little adjusting. Either way, it's still good quality fun image

poptopruss, based on my count, you got 6 of the first 10 coins listed correct,
but since I can't tell the order of the coins, I can't score your invoice
consistently with the others. Although I'm sure it's not true, because I
can't associate a specific coin with a specific grade, it's remotely possible
you missed ALL the coins, so I must disqualify you for the contest, but
congratulate you on a nice invoice and good eye. - Don

9018321 graded today. I was 1 pt high on the 1807 large cent, & 2 pts high on the 1955-D Washington.

I think you can compute my final score now!

We have a winner. BigAl, not only did you pick some very difficult material, you made it look easy. Great score, and great coins. Thanks to all of you who played. You guys all deserve credit for putting your skills on public display, and you all did well. Maybe we can do it again sometime. BigAl, PM me your mailing address and the Lincoln will be on the way in the A.M.

    hey BigAl

you are the man and the grading machine!!!!!!!! though it's said that Morgans are the easiest coin to grade, it still takes consummate skill to be correct and in agreement with a grading service a high percentage of the time. my hats off to you for some fine coins you've ended up with as well as winning the contest.

Keets, certainly the easiest series for me to grade…and the only series I feel somewhat comfortable grading (at least I threw in one circ!)---thanks for your kind remarks! Russ, that goes for you also…

The tricky part to grading these Morgans was in the PL designations. I submitted a few liners, especially the 78, the 83 (that came back 63), the 81, and the 85--which could have gone DMPL.

As for the 91cc (thanks for rubbing it in Don!) yes I dropped the ball on that one, however that coin has a huge rim ding at 12 o’clock on the reverse and I was unsure how pcgs would view that….I felt it was a 62PL, but got nervous and thought PCGS would drop it in a 61 holder….should have gone with the gut, my mistake. At least I now know to Add rather than subtract a point for rim dings!

Don, what a great idea for a cointest, thanks for hosting…enjoyed it very much. Can’t wait to do it again!

    Al.

    Great Contest, nice job BigAl.

For my pride, I make one note of correction. Invoice 9019186 only had 3 coins sent in on line 4. When I started the invoice, I had 5, and wrote that on the form, thus the two "no grades". What I called coins 2 and 3 showed as coins 4 & 5 on the invoice. But I still lost!
