British Penny/Half Penny question

I have finally finished going through a lot of coins I won over a year ago and have discovered a nice selection of British Copper coins. Most of the earlier ones are rather worn looking, but the dates are all visible. Do I have something good here, or just normal circulated stuff?

  • The 1919 penny may have an H or KN mintmark to the left of the date.

The 1860 might be something, otherwise you are looking at "junkbox" prices for the worn ones.
Check the sea on the reverse of the 1957 halfpenny. If it is "calm," then it is worth more than just junk box money.

Also, 1946 is a tough halfpenny date if the coin is UNC or BU...

The 1940 halfpenny is also rare in BU or unc lustre. Recently it appears to be rarer than the 46, Wybrit. If it is high grade I'd like to see a scan since there are three vague varieties of the coin. There seem to have been a few 46's flying round lately in high grade. I think I've sold 8 or 9 since the summer.

You may also scrutinize the 1945 Penny for any doubling on the date.

In order to analyze the 1860 Penny I'd have to see a large scan but as wybrit said, if it's very worn there will not be much interest. Beaded border would still sell quite well mind you (with the right description image)

Just a point about the 57 halfpenny. If you're not sure and want a second reference point, note that the rim of the calm sea is much wider than the "rough" sea.

  • Thanks for the great info. Looks like I've got all common stuff. From what I can tell, the 1857 Half Penny is rough , the 1919 Penny is plain, the 1940 Half Penny is VF+, the 1946 Half Penny is VF+ and the 1860 is very worn but the date is legible.

Just looked closer at the 1945 Penny and alas, no date doubling.
