That's what is referred to as a lamination error, right?

        That's a lot of lamination.

Die chips would be my guess, since the weird areas are raised.

The area on Jefferesons head in a lamination, the "wrinkling" below the jaw, between the neck and the ponytail , and around the date is all a result of die wear causing heavy flowlining on the die.

        What "nuckelhead" and "Condor101" said.

        1) There are chips around the outside, so the die is cracked/chipped.
        2) The area above the ear and on Jefferson's coat are lamination.
        3) The die is worn out, so there are odd flow lines.
        4) The coin is uncirculated!

Can't add to what's already been said about what happened to the coin, but it's a really interesting Jeff. A lot going on.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Ray, is it really only pocket change? I sold an ANACS Jefferson XF40 laminatin error for $20 last year that did not look anywhere as neat as this one- or did I just get a couple bidders that just had to have it? mike image

This nickel is laminated with the lamination still attached.

Nice piece for your collection. As to worth? It is worth whatever the market would pay for it. I would guess maybe $15-$25. Since it is an earlier date, maybe a few dollars more, say $30-$40.

Definitely a neat looking piece. You just have to hope to find the guy/girl wiling to spend that $20 again.
These aren't usually worth much at all. Always worth something to somebody though. image
