I have bought a few whats called shotgun bank rolls with old wrappings with some bank name on them....

After seeing the coins and getting some graded, the few rolls I have purchased I do believe where original and un-opened....

Depends on the roll advertised, but anything that doesn't look like a tightly wrapped original bank wrapper is probably been looked through. Though I have had some pleasant surprises on my original roll breakouts from ebay. Including one 1964 half dollar roll that had 5 MS-66 ones in there, 3 from PCGS and 2 from NGC.

for rolls you can open, like plastic tubes and folded paper rolls, assume the coins have been looked at. This doesn't mean they aren't nice, but it does decrease the probability of finding Gems.

For Original Bank Wrapped rolls (OBW), if genuine they are unsearched, but still hit and miss.

I've gotten nice rolls both ways. And dogs both ways too. you pays you money and you takes you chances.

From looking at the lot description, you can get an idea, but not certainty, of how "original" they are.

A number of years back when I was selling stuff on e-bay and Boxlot I sold many original rolls. I sold them as I received them. Additionally, I had rolls I opened and sold the coins one at a time. The leftover coins from the rolls were sold in lots or spent. I didn't make up rolls out of the left overs. In any case, I am sure some rolls are not picked through, and others rolls are picked through, so it is probably a crapshoot as to each seller is different.

Wait, what kind of rolls are we talking about? I assumed they were silver or at least worth more than FACE VALUE even if they were not gem coins or some rare variety.

If you're talking about modern rolls, then it's got to be OBW only... anything else is probably no good.

  • I have seen "OBW" rolls that clearly have been looked through. All it takes is a wrapping machines and a made up stamp that says "Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland". However, I have had a few rolls from ebay that were clearly original as well. The end coins were the only toned coins and the remainder of the coins had uniform subtle toning on the periphery. All the coins were similar in appearance. Unfortunately, it's just hit and miss.
  • You can find GEMS in many non-original rolls. Many people opened the rolls looking for RPM's and Doubled Dies and left the true gold still in the rolls. The superb GEMS are still to be found in them thar hills. Not all of them, mind you, but many (at least for Lincoln cents)rolls still have the good stuff. For stuff like Jeffersons, if its not OBW don't even think you will find a 54-S in Full Steps in a roll.

Sometimes people will open a roll just to see if it's worth keeping. While it's
no longer original it can be very gemmy. Sometimes, too, you'll find a roll com-
posed of the gems from many different rolls.

Wait, what kind of rolls are we talking about? I assumed they were silver or at least worth more than FACE VALUE even if they were not gem coins or some rare variety.

Wheat cents from as early as 1942 through 1958, Memorial cents from 1959 through 1974-S, and Jefferson Nickels from 1946 through 1956 (all mint marks).

Small date, FULL RED, Gem BU on the cents, and Choice and Gem BU on the nickels (I never checked for FS, but I assume there should have been some.

Some of the cents were red screamers! My guess over the three years I did it, about $75 in face value.

And the nickels were put through a slot machine in a Northern Wisconsin Casino! This was a one time deal of $100 in face value! What a blast!

Not to worry the silver coins were sold off as bulk silver to a local dealer for melt value.
