Canadian Trends?

First time over in the World Forum. I've been noticing some Canadian coins at local auctions lately and would like to buy some but want to pay a fair price. Coin World used to print Canadian Trends once in while. That was before I got interested. Do they still print them at all? I bought the Krause World Coin book, but the Canadian section seems hard to follow and far from complete. What do you guys use for Candian pricing info?

Thanks!

Hey, welcome VEEP!!! Come visit any time. You might find you like it over here.

I believe that the thick catalog by Charleton is used by Canadian coin collectors. It's sort of like the Redbook. I don't know of any other resources, but there are bound to be more. And soon this post will be joined by others from people who know a lot more than I do about Canadian coins.

The latest Charlton is a great start and only runs you around $12 Canadian.

There is a monthly trend published by Tajan Publishing and compiled by Rick Simpson who can be found posting in the CCRS Discussion Forum. It may be difficult to find a copy of the magazine outside of Canada, but here is the website:

    Canadian Coin News.

For varieties, Charlton has some with descriptions and pictures. But more extensive publications were put together by Hans Zoell in the mid century. Although the valuations are out of date it is a good source for information on Canadian coin varieties. The CCRS site also has a good visual and description page setup for varieties.

    Hope this helps

Thanks guys. I looked at the Coin World and I probably need more than that. What promted my question was that I saw an 1867-1967 Wildlife Proof Set that had the most beautiful electric blue toning on the reverse of each of the coins. I bid on it for a while, but then bowed out when it passed my comfort zone.

Hi VEEP, welcome to the dark side (grey side for us Canadian collectors).

A word of caution when bidding on Canadian coins. A lot of sellers refer to Charlton and CCN trends values in their auctions - those values are in Canadian funds! Which are about 30-40% higher than the US dollar.

Coin World trends, Krause, and North American Coin Values (USA, Canada, Mexico) list values in US dollars.
