Reference on Art Medals

Perhaps the best general introduction to the history of art medals is Mark Jone's popular The Art of the Medal. It shows up pretty often, so I wouldn't chase the price up above $50 -- and the first two bidders have been quite active bidding on medals this past year -- but it is "essential reading" IMO.

yup, the current price of $31 is about what I paid for mine...a nice little book. While we're on the subject Mark, do you have any suggestions for any further reading regarding medals? I have been looking for another Jone's book "The Dance of Death" but it is hard to come by. Any general knowledge books regarding medals?

That's the best "general reference" I've come across to date. There might perhaps be something in French, but I'm unaware of it and couldn't read it if I got it. Alors, je parle un peu française.image I've not been able to come across Jones' Dance of Death either. Jone's has written other works on medals, but I've not searched diligently for them since the ones I know of mostly cover US medallists and not in genres I'm terribly interested in.

Don't worry, there are usually 2-3 offered every month. You might check with Numislit or other eBay sellers of numismatic and art books and see if they have any in stock.
