What EXACTLY is a STAR CARD??

I am getting ready to submit a nice size lot to PSA of 1962 Topps Football COMMONS.
My question is what exactly does PSA consider a STAR CARD??
Because it is listed in the SMR as a seperate entry ......does that make it a star card??
Because it is considered a sport print.....does that make it a star card??
Examples of SMR LISTED questionable 1962 Topps Football cards, short prints and less that TRUE STARS are: Alex Hawkins, Bill Wade, Ray Renfro, Don Perkins, Tom Moore, Max Mcgee, Bill Forester, Zeke Bratkowski, Buddy Dial, Bobby Joe Conrad, Detroit Lions team etc. etc. etc.
How do I submit these type of cards......under what category??
Can these cards be considered commons??
They are commons to me....but to PSA??
If I submit them and the graders don't consider them commons.....could your grades possibly suffer because of this??
Always, so many questions. image
As always, thank you much in advance for educating a PSA Rookie.

I believe that the SMR is the differentiator. Short prints and series designations, however, do not a star card make. This is my submission policy: "It's easier to ask forgiveness than ask permission". Submit as much as you can as commons and then let PSA decide.
  • Basically as Vargha said - I think in most sets, you can count 10-15 cards as keys that need to go under star cards, with more in more expensive and earlier sets, and less as you get into the '70s and later. Pretty much, any Mantle (excluding the checklists), almost any Ryan, Rose, Mays, Clemente, Aaron, Koufax, etc., and lesser HOF like Gaylord Perry and Fergie Jenkins I only use their rookies (and rarer cards like the '66 Perry).
  • psa does not grade "star cards".... image

  • Actually they do - they just don't grade Star Basketball.

    HOF = Star
    Just missed HOF = Star
Great player but not HOF worthy = Semi Star
Great player nowhere close to HOF worthy = Minor star

In the 80 set there are a number of greats. Some like Smith,Molitor,Trammell,Henderson are just starting out.

Then you have Schmidt's the Jackson's,Benches and Ryan's half way through

Rose - in his 18th season.
McCovey & Brock final career card

Guys like Niekro,Sutton,Jenkins,Fingers,Stargell and Perry are HOF but not thought of as Key cards to the set in terms of points but HOFERS Nonetheless.

Some of it this I disagree with when it comes to HOFERS but,hey - I don't make the rules.

A number of players with long careers like:Kaat,Morgan,McCarver,Lusinski,Palmer,Kranepool,Campaneris,Niekro,Sutton Alan Trammell,Dale Murphy.

A number of people collect these players where some may be a HOFER but not really thought of as stars, or keys when it comes to the set.
