Is there anything that will remove the funk ( Sorry Carl ) on this coin without hurting the color and surfaces?

PS: Try acetone first, but I don't know if it will help.

I guess I made a rude reply. Sorry Bill, I did not mean it that way.

I have a method to remove all of that but...... all color would also be gone. And NO, it does not effect the metal of the coin, no whizzing, no chemicals and no abrasives........ but also it would only be original copper without any patina.

I suspect that there is no organic matter on the coin for which acetone would work.

What you have is various degrees of oxidation. The most sevier near the rim in front of the face.

Attempts to remove it will change the color or even eleminate it where it is the lightest.

    Could be wrong though.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?

I think I could live with the toning/color/patina. But what's the stuff to the left of Georgius, near the edge?

  • I like the way the larger image shows the coin. I think it's relatively attractive.

I think the funk and the color are one and the same in this case. It's a good looking coin from here though..

Pure acetone dip. Get it at the hardware store as nail polish has too many additives.

Soak it as long as necessary, then rinse it with an entire gallon of distilled water. Don't use tap - too hard.

Perform the ancient Ojibwa funk-medicine dance during the process.

    We ARE watching you.

Do care to teach us this dance?

Coin is soaking in acetone now.

Not taking any chances. I like the color just the way it is and these coins have no hits at all on them. The original box in going in my original box box and the coins are going into Airtites and then into an Eagle album.

I have a 1973 with the same effect - I took the foam insert out and threw it away.

try "Blue Ribbon"...soak for a couple days then rinse with acetone and then distilled water.

Stronger than acetone is xylol. Xylol has worked many times on residues and/or lacquers (?) where acetone has not.
  • cosmicdebriscosmicdebris Posts: 12,332 ✭✭✭
    Where can Xylol be had?

Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc., should have the stuff at about $6 per quart. If you go for an extended "soak" do it outside..........this stuff is nasty....it will eat your lungs quick, so don't breathe it for any amount of time.

One caution, though, if the "funk" is organic and was on the coin before the toning started, you'll probably be left with a bright spot.......
