What would you estimate the sum value of...

all merchandise is at the nations largest coin shows? What's the value of all the merchandise on the bourse floor at any given point in time?

I was thinking at each major show, you are looking at one of the greatest concentrations of wealth in the entire world, and there is WAY too little security.

  • The average dealer will have at least $18,500 with him in coins, multiply that
by an average of 198 tables per show, you have $3,663,000/show at any given
time. This may explain why some of the best dealers I know have a Ruger .22 with them

I doubt that's one of the greatest concentrations of wealth in the entire world. You could probably walk into any upscale large jeweler or Farrari dealer. What about museums or casinos?

The security probably wouldn't stand up to a mass armed robbery - I think you are right there.

I think you are underestimating the value by at least 10 times....several single dealers have near that total estimated amount...image

i walked in at the show in indianapolis couple years ago

right at 200 tables , most covered with paper currency ... more gold than anything else....silver also abound.

and 2 old, fat , slow marion county sherrifs watching the 2 doors into a room big enough to have 4 basket ball games at the same time.

there must have been 30 million there in paper alone!

several tables with money just laying about....and nobody there to watch it!

(i'm sure there was tho) still it was amazing!

sadly i was there for lincoln cents... not much to be seen or had.image
  • You also have to realize that every dealer is on security detail as well and I can guarantee there will be more than one Ruger .22 being carried.

You wouldn't even need to carry a gun into a show to rob more then 80% of the dealers and 100% of the auction-houses.

It would be soooooo simple it isn't even comical.

Most people are asleep at the wheel, especially coin dealers and the people who run the auctions.

I would post it, but I'm afraid that there would be people to try my "idea" and some very expensive coins could get stolen.

The problem isn't stealing them, the problem is fencing them. I could walk into a show and with a little prep an auction and walk out with $10,000+ in stolen coins. But where could I sell them? Another dealer? Never happen.
