Gold and Silver Going Up: What Gets Melted?

Back when metals went nuts '79-'80, the melters melted big time.

1. What gets melted this time?

2. How will it affect coin values, scarcity in the longer run?

3. Is there a buck to be made here?

The value probably isn't high enough to melt yet. But I'd say all the common stuff will go in the fire eventually. And if it goes high enough, average bullion coins in uncirc would go in.

Back during the 1979-80 silver boom just about anything got melted...and in retrospect more should have been! If there should be a major price run-up in silver this time I expect to see many more items thrown into the melting pot. While I don't have a particularly large amount of silver I will consider selling it for melt it if the price rises enough. I wonder how much actual melting is going on these days.

It would be similar to the last time, but there would be less of the heirloom types
of silverware and the like since so much was destroyed in '79/'80. In coins it would
be similar too, with lots of circ later date silver being melted. There would be an aw-
ful lot fewer mint and proof sets this time though since prices are higher and numbers
    surviving are down.
