It looks like a textured pattern. It's rather uncommon. I have some French medals with a background of fleur-de-lis as "wallpaper."

It's a tourist reproduction of a Hawaiian Akahi Dala. Looks pretty cool, though, eh?

Textured fields and bronze or copper bronze in metal content I believe, Got it as part of a Lot I picked up on ebay, Just something pretty.
