First Annual Year-End 1969 Baseball Set Registry Pseudo-Awards
Would anybody care about the Academy Awards if they only handed out a trophy for Best Film? I don’t think so. That’s why they have categories for Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Best Special Effects, Best Costumes, Best Score, etc.
Because PSA only gives out certificates for the highest GPA in any given set, I have decided to hand out the following “pseudo-awards”. They are limited to the 1969 Baseball registry participants because it’s the only registry that I am a member of.
The “Raising the Bar” Award: This goes to the #1 set, Dave Jacobs 1969 Set. Every time he upgrades a card, PSA has to increase it’s finest possible rating. It’s happened twice in the past two weeks! His rating is currently at 8.54.
The “Vicarious Thrill” Award: Dave Read's 69'ers, the #4 set is the one (outside of my own) that I know best. Why? Because since I joined the registry I have enjoyed watching him inch closer to 100% while maintaining his lofty GPA. I had never rooted for a stranger to win ebay auctions until I saw his set.
The “Shoulda been an Author” Award: The Ray Boehm Collection at #6 has, by far, the best owner’s comments of any set on the 1969 registry. It really expresses his passion for collecting and it even has an acceptance speech built right in.
The “Picture Perfect” Award: Dan Markel’s #7 set is 84.79% complete; that’s 563 cards. He has taken the time to include scans of every card in his set.
The “Bob Dole” Award: I don’t know who wrote the comments for The Bakka Collection - 69, the #13 set but Frank is referred to in the 3rd person 5 times and thus deserves the Bob Dole Award.
The “Stick to Your Guns” Award: The Michael Disfarmer set is at #20 with a GPA of 6.86%. Once you start to put together a graded set, it’s easy to get sucked into a “keeping up with the Jones’ mentality”. Let’s not forget that a PSA 7 is near mint! Also, many cards that now receive grades of PSA 6 were referred to as mint before grading became prevalent. This set gets this award for caring more about completion than set registry points.
The “Long Distance” Award: The #36 set belongs to liffeystynx 1969 who lives about 6,000 miles away from PSA’s grading facilities. He may be the only person in Ireland who actually cares about our nation’s favorite pastime.
The “Coloring Inside the Lines” Award”: This three-way tie goes to the sets in positions 25 (David Eloe), 27 (Frank's 1969 Adventure) and 35 (PSA Rich's 1969 Topps). The owners of these sets have obviously decided on the grade in which they would like to complete their sets (either 8 or 9) and they have not deviated by one card!
The “Get out of the Way or Get Run Over” Award: Clubhouse Turn, currently at the #30 spot has 400 1969 cards at PSA right now and will be in the top 10 (for the second time) by the time I finishing typing this.
The “Mouthful” Award: Chuck Nan's 1969 Graded Topps Baseball Set at 42 characters is the longest title of the 1969 set registry but he will have to double it if he wants to compete among the rest of the 60’s set; check out 1966.
Congratulations to all of this year's winners!

I nominate ZodiacMindwarp for best screen play, because I've been reading and re-reading my screen of his play for the past several minutes.
Got a little extra time on your hands over the holidays, eh?

IMO,
The 69'ers are the best group around. Very helpful and always willing to help,
ZodiacMindwarp that was awesome,
Glen
Great post and thanks for the props on the scans. I don't know why people don't take the time to scan their sets. It's a great way to view your set when you are at the office or traveling.
A final comment: I collect a bunch of different years of Topps ('67-'73) and althought the '69 set isn't one of my most favorite sets, the '69 collectors are definitely in a class of their own and I'm proud to be a part of the group.
Great perception on behalf of the '69 guys...
With that much fun...Maybe I'll start a '69 set too!!
Happy New Year!!

<< <i>you couldn't find an award for gemint? how about the "suzan lucci" award? >>
How about the "obsession award" for my non-stop posts about the Lou Brock card? Or maybe the highest asking price for a 1969 set in the history of the hobby?
Seriously, that was a great post Zodiac. I enjoy being part of the '69 crowd and discussing the '69 set as often as possible. It would be nice to see similar groups form with other sets. Other than the '72 set (and maybe the '65 set), there doesn't seem to be active discussions about those sets.
Great post. I don't check the boards as often as I wish I could, but when I do, it's posts like yours that keep me coming back.

You can tell how long its been since I updated my set by the comments.
It used to be that whenever you wrote in the first person... that your description was edited by the keepers of the registry to put it into the third person (for what reason - I have nooooo idea). But, since this set is currently about 9th on my priority list - the comments stay.
And on the same topic - Frank Bakka is proud to be associated with the former VP and spokesman for Viagra, Ensure and Depends.
Sets - 1970, 1971 and 1972
Always looking for 1972 O-PEE-CHEE Baseball in PSA 9 or 10!
