I'd like to punch that smiley guy and slick salesman, Mike M., right in the face! Does anyone else think he's had his teeth bleached?

  • << why? >>

Nobody's teeth can look that good!!!!! I don't see how he could have teeth like that without having had them bleached. He doesn't even look normal. Oh well, maybe that helps his job as a con artist. Okay, I guess I'm probably a bit jealous also...

He is a demonic piece of crap. He has no soul and will burn in hell to a crisp. They outright lie on that show. They are pond scum.
  • Okay you guys. Let's look at the 1908 St. Gaudens BU Gold $20 coin (no motto). $899.95 + $11.95 S&H. There is no guarantee what "BU" means. This could be anything from MS60 to MS70.

I checked eBay, and here is a recent one that sold graded NGC MS63 for $609.00 + $5.00 S&H: 1908 NM $20 Saint Gaudens NGC MS63 No Reserve. What a ripoff!!!!!

no worse than shopping at the mall and realizing that the same clothes will be at ross or tj maxx or any number of liquidation stores for a fraction of the price later.

you need to get out into the real world a little more, brian. it's filled with stores that sell merchandise at something called 'retail'.
i visited someone's home today and they had a shelf in their 11 year-old daughter's room decorated with bags from bebe, bloomies, saks, cartier, louis viton, etc. the mother was trying to ingrain in her that if it isn't bought from stores such as those then it has no cache or value.
    that's why these shows survive.

It's really not as much the prices that bother me as it is their marketing. They're often dishonest.

I think you hit the nail on the head. This is the way our culture thinks. The pedigree matters. If you really think about it, most people buy stuff they can't afford from upscale retail stores with money they don't have to impress people they don't even like! Most self-made millionaires don't care what other people think. They don't care what emblem is stitched on their shirt, or what car they drive, or where something they purchased came from.

  • tassa,
a great deal of the marketing done in america is moderately dishonest. these programs make your ears perk up only because you know better. what happens when you are not in tune with a product? have any clue on the mark-ups on clothes, furniture, oriental rugs, prescription drugs, etc.? do the adds in the paper & on tv bother you because you know that somewhere out there, there is a better price available?

I do see your point, but I also see a difference in comparing these types of shop at home shows to commercials. Most commercials, ads, etc don't tout an item as being "rare," "scarce," "hard to find," or "an unbeatable deal" when it's not.
As for mark-ups on clothes, furniture, prescription drugs, etc. I try to shop around. I couldn't care less about brand names as long as the quality is good.
  • try the mark up on soft drinks sold for a buck the container cost more then the soft drink in it

wayneme has helped me make this point. that markups in most products is substantially higher than those in the coin biz - even for the markups on the coin shows.

I agree the cost of pop is in the penny range the cup is worth more in the pennies range
market up even at the food store is 33 to 50 percent on most items
after the producer and middleman's mark-up
  • I believe these are two entirely different sets of circumstances.

Touting a coin or set of coins as rare to an unknowing public is different in my opinion as they are not just hawking merchandise, but also future value.

I would liken this situation to a broker who is making a market in a particular stock and has a million shares in inventory. He or she will tout this as the next coming of Jesus in order to unload that inventory. The unknowing public will buy it looking for a price appreciation. The knowing public will stay away. The stock is sold, the volume in the stock collapses and next thing you know it is $0.10 bid and will go untraded for weeks.

Clothes and soda pop are what they are, so called investments are yet again another thing.

This is the way our culture thinks. The pedigree matters.

Why...because usually the pedigree is of a higher quality. There are so many imitations in our free market that short cut on quality and people get burned. How and when can the newbie coin buying public learn that for coins the pedigree is a reputable 3rd party grading?

I admit it: I put wipe some whitening bleech stuff on my teeth too image

Hey...You guys remember Bill Gayle? Guess who reported him to the FTC? Remember BUY TV? I sent them a registered letter one day, immediately after realizing I did not want the doo-doo they were offering. They signed it(follow me now) acknowledging receipt of the fact that I didn't want it, which I made perfectly clear...this was some time back....point is AFTER they signed the green card which I now had in my posession ...ONE WEEK LATER they shipped it anyway. Knowing the law helps. If or when someone ships something to you that you have not ordered or made clear that you do not want-it becomes a gift. I never got a bill for it. They bit the dust ,too. This goes hand in hand with Ken Pines' Coast to Coast. I wrote Beth Deisher until I was written out about these crooks. Well...money talks. They may have gotten kicked out the ANA but they sure are still advertising in CW. CW can be found culpable of false and misleading advertising. I refer to these vendors as carnival barkers! What amazes is me is how these people stay in business...at how many "Numismatically ignorant" people there are out there!

What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?
  • I was watching last week when they put up a lot of Walking Liberty Half Dollars. They were going on about how they were selling for just over bullion value, and stated that at $5.72 an ounce, the half dollars with half an ounce of silver had $2.86 in bullion value, so them selling them for about $4 a piece was a great deal. I'm surprised they were able to get away with that -- isn't it misprentation to say the Walking Liberty halves have 1/2 ounce of silver (and say the bullion value of those coins) when it's really closer to 1/3 ounce?

I'm hardly in favor of calling 1/3 oz of silver a 1/2 oz or misleading and lying to people
but we've tolerated advertisers promise us unlimited access to the opposite sex if we
just use the right toothpaste or salvation for purchasing the right car. We are lied to,
rapped to, and fed propoganda on a continuing basis by a multitude of hawkers who
would happily sell the devil to their own mother.

Why draw the line here? This nonsense should be stopped but it should be stopped
across the board and it won't happen until people think it should happen.
