Indian Head 1864 -Copper-Nickel or Bronze?

I am looking at a raw 1864 Indian Head that an oldtime collector has, it has beautiful toning and I can purchase it at a reasonable price regardless of variety. How can I tell which variety it is?

Thanks,
Dan

    The CN are whiter in appearance.

    Bronze have a darker appearance.

    CN cents are also significantly thicker than Copper. I don't have my redbook with me, but I think the difference is at least 20%. In any case, it is enough that you can tell by looking at the profile of the coin.

    yes, it's about like comparing a nickel to a cent in thickness. Very easy to tell the difference. mike
  • Thanks for the answers

    the toning makes the color difference hard to spot but the weight and thickness will help a lot

    CN=4.87 grams Bronze=3.11 grams
