It would seem that PCGS standards have become a little more lenient on the color patterns they accept. This is good news, since alot of NT coins have wild patterns that sometimes look AT at first glance.
The toned SAE thread was the reason I joined the Boards actively instead of lurking . . . . . several months ago. Best move I've ever made, numismatically.
I can attest that a variety of toning patterns WILL make it into PCGS holders . . .I just got my 2001, 2, and 3s back last week (I posted the grades then). I now have a full date run of business strikes with a variety of duplicates . . . batting 100% on PCGS with 30/30 over three separate submissions. Primarily the toning is similar to the posted image . . . although mine seem to be a bit more electric (indigo rims and harvest gold centers for the most part). I have one or two with the 'olive/flat blue' look of the above scan . . . and a couple monochromatic (1 blue and a couple brilliant orange/gold). ALL of them have made it into holders . . . it seems if the 'look' is right, there is no problem at all. The primary look they seem to go for comes from the 'Snap'Fit' holder concentric/bullseye/target type toning . . . I guess it's as natural as you're bound to get on a 2000-2003 SAE! Many of these get brought back into shops due to 'tarnishing' in the Snap-Fits (graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.).
Good question . . .what is 'natural' and what is 'AT'? Can a 2003 SAE have natural toning? I'm not sure of the answers to those questions, but mine are now in hand . . . I'll see if I can figure out how to post images sometime.
