Error Experts.....Die cracks and extra metal left...

Hey Experts,

I have searched many 2003p Lincoln rolls this year and would appreciate your opinions on this issue. I have come across a roll that has numerous die cracks on the reverse and on several coins the cracks lead to "extra metal" within(or on the outside)of these cracks that look like rim cuds. Extra metal has been deposited somewhere along the cracks. What is this technically called? I have 8 coins exactly the same with the above mentioned point plus they have a bridge of "melted metal" between the N and U in UNUM on the reverse. Again, there are 8 coins that are exactly the same with these traits. Any ideas how this happened? Just a simple cracked die?.......are the 2003 cracked dies worth collecting? I have never seen 8 coins match with the same problem or error if you wish. Thanks for your help.

sounds like the die was breaking pretty good at the point your coins were minted.

    be nice to see pics.

These are, for the most part, not super vaulable, but they are very collectible.

The more extreme looking, the better value I think.

If it were to be labled a die-break it may have more value.
  • You really shouldn't describe them as having "extra metal" on them at all as they have exactly the same amount of metal as they would have if the dies were not cracked. I don't approve of the term "melted metal" either since coins are in effect cold forged and not liquid at all (even though the metal does flow during the striking). It can be confusing to newbies or non-collectors, some of whom do have the impression that coins are cast or molded.
