Hypothetical question for the dealers on this forum

Let's say you are going to a major coin show that is 1000 miles away from your home base. You want to have a large inventory selection for the bourse. How do you get your coins to the show if you are flying? Obviously you can't put them in checked luggage, especially now that all luggage must be left unlocked. Carry on? Too many coins? Ship them ahead of time? If you drive to the show there isn't a problem. Reallycurious about the answer. Thanks.

  • Don,
I don't mean to hi-jack your thread but could you say how many coins? Weight? volume? you need to transport?

Ignore this if you like because I never have been to a coin show and, of course, I am not a dealer.

That's a mystery I'd sure like to have solved too!

  • You might want to post this query on the Liteside too, Don. There are a number of bigtime dealers there who have no doubt already had to confront the problem.

I have flown to far away shows and carry my briefcase onboard. I have been stopped at security because of the odd shape a bunch of coin produce. Inform the security guard that you would prefer to open the case in private to get away from the others on the flight and insure privacy. Your biggest danger is outside of the Airport not the flight.

There may be other good tidbits from other dealers regarding processes/security, etc., but read what Steve Ellsworth has to say at Butternut.

Heed his tips and you'll lessen any chances of problems. Also, at the few major shows where I split tables with Ed Hipps in the early 80s (when I was a baby image), he always hired an off-duty cop to escort and drive us back to the airport. Good money for them and security for you when you are unable to carry.

I believe the good Colonel published this in a series in Coin World a couple years ago. It remains the best advice I've ever read.

Don- I dunno what the big boys do, but here is an idea which may or may not be practical: if you wanted to bring some stuff but not fly with it, ship it to Michael or Terry or Joe or I, as we will be driving (I know Michael and I will be, anyway, as we are carpooling in Lord Marco's Van). If there is anything you would like us to bring, ship it to one of us, we can carry it down for you, and if you don't sell or swap it, we can carry it home and ship it back to you from there.

    Just a thought.

A little history behind my question. Mrs ajaan asked me how the big dealers bring their coins to a major show. She was in Charlotte and saw all the expensive coins for sale. I told her I would ask here. Mark suggested I post it on the liteside, which I did. I got a few totally irrelavant replies and a few good honest responses, all along getting flamed by people who did not understand what I was asking. Thanks askari for clearing that up.

Last time I ask a question for my wife on the US Coin Forum. I'm staying over here from now on.

Wayne, I personally won't be carrying any coins to FUN. If I did, they would go in a carry on bag.

    Don,
......why don't you just take them with you as carry-on luggae? Are they too heavy?" --Newbie

The shroom probably is loaded up with gold, platinum and silver! Not to mention copper. Probably needs a forklift to carry it.

I don't know about LoweredMinivan, but sending anything to the Dead King's house is tantamount to throwing it all down a black hole!! So be wary.

You're welcome, Don. I'm glad I was able to stir up some useful comments. One never knows with the Liteside, unfortunately -- I shouldn't have had to weigh in like that and in the old days I wouldn't have needed to.image
