How come he doesn't rag on this coin? A 200 year old copper coin Red? Copper's a lot more reactive than silver. So how come this one has never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever been cleaned? It doesn't even look Red. Looks RB to me, or more accurately, OB (orange-brown).

A 200 year old copper coin Red?

I've seen many 200 year old original red coppers. I even have one 380 year old copper with traces of original red. The things are unusual, but certainly not unheard of.

Anaconda's auctions are never funny. Nope, never. Never ever ever infinity. Well... maybe now and then. Maybe. Possibly. Perhaps. Once in a while. Yeah, I think so sometimes. You have my word on it. I'm pretty sure it's funny sometimes. I think. I'm pretty sure about that.

I know old red coppers exist, but the distrusting soul I am does not believe they are original. There's a wholesaler at a local show who has incredible red IHCs, most of which are in PCGS slabs. I've heard lots of stories (all unsubstantiated, of course)about the before and after on these coins.

    Barry,

He doesn't rag on it 'cause he believes it's really red & wants 13K for it. It may be the scan, but the coin looks baumed to me. I've seen quite a few "red" coppers that were treated. Generally done 80 - 100 years ago by collectors who wanted red copper. Gold was also "brightened" in this manner.

Anyway, even if red, the coin is worth no where near 13K. This is 16N2, one of the most common Matron Heads. Value? Maybe 5K. There are a few red pieces in hi end EAC collections. I think it was Naftzger's red piece that sold for around that money a few years ago. Nicer coin, too.

Also, Anaconda's being a bit disingenous about the pricing. True, Greysheet doesn't list RED, but Bluesheet does. Price for Coronet 64Red? 2300 - 2500. Double it 'cause it's "Pop 1" (at least the only PCGS, tho' most early copper is not slabbed) and it's a Matron Head. Value? Still 5K or so. Even if you triple the price 'cause of the supposed grade rarity it's still only a 7500K coin.

BTW, if you collect copper it would be wise to remember that much of the best copper is not slabbed by PCGS or anyone. This stuff is all in specialist collections, so to me the Registry is a delusion.
