What lighting problem? Interesting coin, I think, for a "common" coin....image Thanks for sharing, Newbie.

  • Thanks for the nice comment. These coin are VERY common. They are aslo very "bright" in hand. You either have to see one in hand or ignore my photo. It is the lighting I am having problems with. My camera is a a good one, I think, and a lot more informed than I am .......image

  • Lighting is ALWAYS the problem!

I use 3 halogen lamps for lighting and setup everything on a table at a bay window. Lots of natural light combined with the halogen lights.

The halogen lamps are from K-Mart, cost about $10 each and are a clamp on type ... makes placement easy!

Also they are gooseneck style so they are very easy to position. They are about 20 watts each so they add up to plenty of light.

The background of the coin makes a lot of difference in exposure and, unless you crop, in the overall appearance of your photos.

Go get some usable lights and have fun!
  • Very nice pic of a very nice coin, newbie. image

  • Nice coin newbie! You are sentenced to keep doing the same for the next full year... image

Bright coins are the worst aren't they? If you dull things down enough to remove most of the glare then it looks flat.
If you don't take the glare off then all the detail is lost.

  • I have been able to get a few very good representations for some coins using natural light. Unfortunately, where I am, I don't get much of that this time of year.

Thanks for the comments folks, I was just trying......... one more time.... for a good photo.

  • If I could get a little sun light it would look (not be) very nice in the photo.
