Slabbing World coins ?

In 1985 during a 3 week trip to Europe I bought 30 or 40 nice Taler sized coins from various shops in towns we visited. Most of these were from the 1600's and 1700's. I am thinking about having them certified. Who would you say would do the best job? NGC or PCGS? Does NGC even slab World coins?

All major grading companies slab world coins.I'd choose NGC if I were you , as long as your coins are listed in Krause. For ancient coins , you should contact ICG.

Congratulations on your great score, GS!! Your coins must be impressive, and relatively cheap compared to early US dollars. I'm sorry that I can't give you any advice as to which service to use. I've seen those coins in all three TPG slabs, however. But I don't know which service is best at attribution or grading. However, there are plenty of people on these boards with that experience, so we'll have to wait till they weigh in. Good luck.

  • Might as well do it right, go PCGS!

  • Why do you think that the market for old rare Europe pieces lags so far behind the U.S. market? Several of these coins seem to be fairly rare R5 and R6 yet compared to there U.S. type conterparts the prices are very cheap. Has the increase in the Euro against the dollar help these prices?

Quite honestly I would go with NGC or ANACS for Talers depending on size. ANACS will only go up to 40mm and NGC is slightly larger (46mm?). I was told by a PCGS rep they wouldn't slab pre-1700 talers, David Hall said they would. I wouldn't spend $30+ to find out who is correct. NGC charges $12/coin + shipping for 10 day service fir World Coins.

  • Thanks for your help!! I may see if you Guys and Gals can help identify some of these after the first of the year. I bought a couple out of a museum collection from a friend in Austria. he was also asst. curator for the coin collection at that time, and the museum had a couple of duplicates that were not displayed. I think he told me that these were special editions like U.S. patterns might be. They were double the weight and thickness of a regular Taler. Anyone know anything about those?

GS, They're called multiple talers...if you can get an image to us I , for one, can probably get an answer back to you since I have a pretty extensive taler and world crown reference library. I'd be interested in seeing them. Scott

    BTW, Welcome.

Welcome, Goldsaint!! I'm sure we can identofy them for you. Generally speaking, most world coin collectors don't slab their coins unless needed for authentication or protection. Of those who do, the order of preference for TPGs is generally NGC, ANACS and then PCGS. Not quite what you're used to on the Liteside, but that's the way it goes.
