My son just purchased a 1808 half franc. He's a big fan of Napoleon! How many other denominations have this same obverse design? Is this one silver? Are silver and gold coins of this same type?

There are several types, even among the Napoleon portrait coins, as some have him bareheaded and others have him with a laureate bust.

The bronze coins have just an "N" monogram- no portrait.

There are silver 1/4 francs, 1-franc pieces, 2-franc pieces, and nice silver-dollar-sized 5-franc pieces which aren't too awfully expensive in the lower grades.

You can also get Napoleon-portrait gold 20-franc and 40-franc pieces, and the 20-franc gold coins are readily available in the circulated grades. They contain .1867 ounces of gold, and while they aren't dirt cheap, they aren't terribly expensive, either, considering their age, history, and metallic content.

90% of the time, I fall into the former category, myself.

There are both gold and silver coins that have different portraits of Nepoleon. I like the silver 5 Francs coin with the laureate bust. These seem to be getting tougher to locate in high end circ and uns grades.
