That coin looks like it was minted yesterday. Fantastic!

I need an icon showing a mouth wide open with drool... or maybe a green with jealousy icon if anyone buys it. That is Beautiful!

Right now I am REALLY hoping I find a large, unexpected check from Santa.

Very interesting! I didn't know that the Melbourne mint made anything like that in 1887!

    Did they? image

Say it isn't so...I don't usually look under Australia, and all I have right now is the 3rd edition of World Gold Coins and the 1887 they show is a Jubilee Head (with 11 pieces minted). Sigh, is there a Lump of Coal pending for some evil ebayer, or is my book fooling me?

The listing says: "The proof set is listed in Spinks 2003, reference page 431, under proof sets." Anybody with 2003 Spinks care to confirm?. I've seen business strike young head sovereign from 1887 with a St George reverse from London Mint without the ribbon on the helmet. This is the first time I've seen a YH/St George with the ribbon version helmet and a larger denomination than a sovereign and a proof to boot. image

I had an 1887 YH proof sovereign about five years ago. No mintmark, but probably struck in Australia. It was definitely real.

However, I have serious suspicions about this eBay item.

The engraving style doesn't look contemporary to my wee mousie eye. It really looks like a Pobjoy repro or somesuch. image

At least that's my tuppence. image
