So, if you win and pay for an item on eBay.......

RampageRampage Posts: 9,512 ✭✭✭✭✭
and the seller says he never got the check, but has not made an effort to contact you, what do you do?

Here it is:

I won an auction about 2 months ago now. I wanted to pay with credit card because the seller took over a week to send me an email. He only sent the email after I sent him one. So, right off the bat, I did not trust him. No biggie. He gave me his number to call with credit card info. Tried several times, no answer. Finally, he filed an NPB reminder with eBay. No biggie. I sent him a check as he requested.

Now, I just called and got him to answer because I wanted to know where my coin was. He said he never got it.

I checked with my bank. The check was not cashed.

So, what would you all do? Would you mail him another check, or just forget about it?

Thanks.

  • I would stop payment on the check and forget about the coin.

    I'd mutually call it off...

The only similar thing that happened to me was with MBCoin... I sent two checks a month apart, and neither made it... he said there were mail problems. So I just had a friend in the same town send a check on my behalf... it worked out just fine, and he was very patient... a good, but weird, experience.

Stop payment on the first check if it hasn't cleared, then get a PO money order. You can track those as well I think to see if they've been submitted for payment.

I'd get out of this one if you can...this dude sounds like a deadbeat and you're gonna get burned somehow.
  • How much was the item, can you afford a neg., it's been 2 months; 1) I'd say uck'em and the horse he/she rode in on. Now, 2) if the coin is that important to you, and keeping in mind the price you paid for it(weather or not HE can afford to let you slide); I'd give it one more whirl and try option 2, if he's receptive...JMPOV...image

Stop the transaction. Then if you still want the coin I'd go with a PO money order. I only pay with PO money orders now because of this very type of seller. I only pay by personal check if it's someone who I have had good dealings with in the past or a member of this forum.

I forgot the details about the cost.

The coin was only $13.50 including shipping. Not a big deal either, but it was a nice coin and I wanted it.

I called the guy back and this time, I paid with my credit card, so now, if anything bad happens from it, I can take recourse.

Hopefully, he will not cash the check now.

To stop payment on it would cost more than the check. So, that option is out.

Also, the seller has 100% feedback rating, out of 15 feedbacks. I know it is not allot, but one has to start somewhere. We were all at zero at one point.

I just did not want the negative feedback over $13.50.

Indeed, we must all start somewhere sometime! However, (and I don't want to make you TOO paranoid) if he is this new to the Bay of E, I'd definately be leery about him accepting C.C. just starting out.......something to ponder before it gets potentially out of hand...image

He owns a coin shop in New York. I don't think I have anything to worry about with that.

Again, if he turns out to fraud me, then I can just have the credit card reverse the charge. I can also close that account and get a new number if need be. You don't need to file a claim for small amounts like that.

Sometimes, you have to trust people.

Not surprising. Mail service seems to be exceptionally bad this holiday season. It looks like they may have lost one of my packages - only the second ever in all the thousands I've shipped over the years.

If the seller can accept credit cards directly, that means he has a merchant account which likely indicates he's a legit business. That would be more reassuring than his feedback.
