The 79-CC Morgan IS A FAKE !! Dollardude, Gilbert, and ...

See the previous post (1879-CC Morgan, new variety) Mr. Eureka, Dollardude, and Gilbert, got me to look away from the mintmark (and I've been looking at that mm for 10 years!) and consider that the coin was made from 2 coins. I never considered this as the coin is not even MS60, and I assumed it would take a bunch of work, but ... I spun the coin on a wooden table and when it went down, no ring! Just a thud! Then I weighed it on my reloading scale (do any of you guys reload ammo?) - under 370 grains!!! (should be around 415). Dollardude got me looking at the flat rev rim ... There is a very fine "seam" hidden in the artificially flattened rim ... great job dollardude!!

OK, 1) How do they do this??, 2) why do it to a coing that was only worth several hundred dollars at the time (maybe it was worth more in the early 80s?), and 3) and WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH IT??

I just the fun could have lasted through the holidays ... Jeff

If you cast yer own bullets just throw it in the pot OR you can send it to all of the grading services and see how they deal with it. Then you can report the results back here. Perhaps some of the bored members might make a little donation to help finance the experiment.
    Happy Holidays!!!

  • But I have a 100% positive feedback record on ebay !! Maybe I should sell it at the auction house that I bought it from 10 years ago .. hummmm

Oh, you have receipts from the auction house? Sure, get your money back. Do a little ranting, raving, and feet stomping if necessary.

Threaten to post everything (including scans of receipts) on the PCGS message board, lol. So...DON'T TELL US WHO (Yet). image

  • Jack,

I got this over ten years ago, so I'm sure the auction house would be in tears laughing! Anyway, they do a good job, and even back then they gave an option to have it certified before you leave the premis with it (this is a local auction business in Michigan by the way) I like bajjerfan's idea of sending it to several grading services and reporting back ... "board members" of what? (remember, I'm new here) - Jeff

  • No that anyone cares, but I think this is facinating! Take a look at this picture. I used the flash to make the "seam" show up a little better - it's harder to see otherwise (and that's my story and I'm sticking to it!). The seam is just above the denticles in the flattened rim. The guy must have milled out a 1879 something, then milled a CC down to fit in the hole ... unbelievable! - Jeff

Good workmanship on it, at least. would be interesting to see if the slabbers pick it up.

Buy ya a bullet mold and make ya some bullets to have on hand in case of werewolf attacks.

You could always offer it up on EBay as a fake......there are some collectors out there who might be interested.

  • Conder and "Board Members"

    1) Who might be interested in this very fine example of workmanship of the machinist's trade?? and,
    2) Which grading service should I try first (if we go that way) to see if they screw it up??

All input is greatly appreciated! - Jeff
  • Jeff, I'm glad you found the truth! Good for you! You had us all racking our brains there for a while! I'd keep it as a novelty item to show to other dealers to see if they can identify the VAM! image

    What should you do with?

Blow the average collectors mind by walking around with a '79-CC pocket piece. image

Ya' perchance recall where you acquired it? If so, give that so and so a ringy-dingy. Otherwise, I s'pose someone will by it - if on eBay, just make sure you loudly proclaim it as not authentic. Even so, I'll bet someone is going to claim they bidded believing it to be authentic. Good luck.

Oh, and BTW, you are taken this "sham" pretty well.

Gilbert ... I've certainly been entertained and educated to the tune of my $240 investment some 10 plus years ago! I manage to live with very little regret! (I have a great wife and two great (almost adult) boys) A local shop keeper asked me last month how the boys were doin'. I told him I was living proof that a very mediocre father could raise two great kids. The guy in line behind me asked me how many did I have?? Very funny guy!
