For Elverno...

French essai or medal?

Looks like copper of copper toned silver.

    That's a beautiful and well-done piece.

So many coins, so little money!

I do not believe this is a medal-it is an essai or trial piece that has the regular obverse for the 5 franc series from Domard (well-known French engraver) with a commem. reverse that would be changed to the 5 Francs w/wreath for the normal 5 Franc series. I can not find this listed in a number of sources I expected to so it may very well be as rare as Staples says it is. It doesn't seem to be struck from silver either as the normal 5 Franc coins were for the period. The Nantes reverse is very well done...

  • I'd have to agree with Laurent. It certainly isn't listed in any of the medal references that cover the period. Very pretty though.
