Surprise Christmas bonus from work...

what would you do with an unexpected paycheck ?
I'm torn between putting it into my mutual funds,
my interest-bearing checking account, ( which would be the same return ),
handing over to my girlfriend and her two kids,
replacing my ten -year-old car,
or buying that 1892 CC Morgan that would put me close to finishing the set.

I realise the season calls for giving but, I figure I've spent more on gifts
that I'm likely to get, so why not treat myself ?

Not asking for permission, just opinions.
Thanks , and Happy Holidays !

  • Actually, the old clunker, ( '94 Probe GT ) still runs.
Also thought I might just take the check to the Frederick Coin show !

I receive a year-end bonus/distribution every year. What I generally do is plan the % allocation prior to my finding out what the amount is. Here is my plan for this year:
    35% Mutual Funds
    25% Money Market/Savings
    10% Pay Down Mortgage
10% Add to kids' custodial accounts
    10% Charity
    10% Coins
  • My suggestion! Spend it on yourself. If you spend it on yer girl, I can appreciate that....BUT....inevitabley you'll marry her so she'll get yer money then.

So, what you should do is start looking into GOLD because most chicks (including me own) are GOLDIGGERS...image, and this guy I know has a BEAUTIFUL 1908 "No Motto" $20 St Gauden in PCGS MS-64 fer sale. Just think about this for a moment; knowing what powerful bit of wisdomatic knowledge I've just given you, buy the $20 St. Gauden for HER not YOU as a Christmas present, and brother you'll "Be in like flint" when you marry her. She just might LET YOU collect coins after yer wed.........image

  • If I had any credit card debt at a high interest rate, or really any rate I'd pay that off first. Then upgrade the car. Coins are luxuries. If the car breaks and you have to sell a coin in a hurry... that would not be good.

Buy the Morgan. You will thank me later. You earned it.
  • RYK, I'm afraid my bonus check isn't as much as yours; 10% wouldn't get me
    a 1921 D ms-60.

Razorface, you've just convinced me that bachelorhood may be my only
ticket to completing my Morgan set. Thanks.

ps: credit cards balances are always paid off in full.

It's down to new car or Morgan.

Maybe used car AND Morgan !!!

I am really impressed with this distribution of funds. I congratulate you on planning this out. If I were to get a bonus, I would like to do something like this, with the exception of the kids since I don't have any.

This type of distribution would be my recommendation as well.

Whenever someone wants me to looks at 'grandpa's coin collection' saying that he had been collecting for over 50 years and I am presented usual assortment of drivel and junk I tell them that, 'In 1955 grandpa had a choice. He could have bought a new car or one really outstanding coin. He chose the car. The car went to the junk yard in 1965.' End of story.
  • Just looked up the price history of the 1892 CC ms-63.
It's risen $100 per year for the last three years !
    No sign of going down.

Just refinanced the condo at a lower rate.
The car still runs great, though it is ten years old.
Have no kids to put through college.
    Have no credit card debt.

Think I'll go for the Morgan !

Thanks for all the input. Believe it or not , my mind
    wasn't already made up !

How many miles on the car? My 94 Probe was running great with over 180,000. If it wasn't for the garage fire, I would still have it. Replaced it with another $500 car. Other than that, I still have my 31 year old truck. No cost, easy to work on.

If you don't need a car, buy the coin.

Let's see ... if I put half of my Xmas bonus into my mutuals and half into coins ... I will have exactly zero for both ... sounds like a plan. image

Gotta go with the car ...

I concur with tootawl. Christmas bonus? What's that? I thought those things only exist in movies. LoL. Anyway, coins are great but I'll go with the car myself.

  • Never blow your bonuses on a woman. That's the one time in the year you can claim that work is really slow and spend it all on yourself. Besides, the rest of the year you're busy supporting everyone else anyway.
