Jefferson people, would this one be Full Steps?

Or do the dings preclude it from getting the designation?

Great close up of the steps... I will offer my thoughts but hopefully you will hear from others. I think it is a very close close call, but I think it may fall short of the designation of full steps. BTW, what is the date? Please consider posting a shot of the entire coin. I will explain the motivation after the picturse are posted. Thanks Russ.

I have a couple in PCGS FS slabs with worse dings than that - but I bought them, didn't make them

    coinkat,

It's a 1940-D. Very common in full steps, so it's likely one that doesn't qualify for a "benefit of the doubt" designation. This is just a learning thread for me. image

  • I have a PCGS FS that doesn't look all that different. Heck, PCGS will call them FS with the wholoe bottom step smooshed in.

If nothing else, it's definitely FS in my bookimage

PCGS would probably not designate it FS because of the center contact at the fifth and sixth steps along with several areas of weakness that appear to be bridged. the easiest way for me to discern bridging is to look along the steps as opposed to looking directly at them. i always look at steps with a 3X-6X glass only.

if i had to guess, i'd say this was an early 40's "D" mint coin.

    Russ:

With all due respect, I was not attempting to hijack your thread and it is your thread. I thought that it mostlikely was a 40-D or 41-D. Its close to 6 steps instead of five which is plus. My concern with the Jefferson series is that the focus has been on the limited to the full steps designation while ignoring the entire Monticello structure...

  • Russ, On a good day you may get it but probably only if you slip it in with about 10 no brainers and they slip up. Probably not worth a try unless you are looking for 67 on the coin.

    Coinkat,

Didn't think you were trying to hijack. image Just didn't bother to shoot the whole coin since it's just a "learner". I can tell you, though, that the pillars on it are rather weakly struck and mushy at the top, as is the overhang thingy.

    Russ:

It is a "learner" for all of us whether we want to admit it or not and thanks for posting the picture and even raising full steps question. From my perspective the Full Steps designation has had an influence in this series that is tough to explain... look at some other dates such as the 1953-s and any struck from 1954... these dates are very rare with full steps but even some of those that have full steps have other areas of Monticello that are weak... so the question is Full Steps or a sharp Monticello? Just for kicks, keep your eyes open for a well struck 53-s that has a nice Monticello and doesn't make full steps and grades MS66 or higher. Have fun...image

Btw, the nick above the I in Monticello is what I believe is the stopper from a 5 Full steps designation. The other nick above the edge of the C would not stop a Full Steps designation IMHO.
